えっへんといっても、ちょっと威張ったりする時のそれではありません。

話をする前に、ちょっとのどの調子を整える・・・というようなときの「えっへん」です。

ですので、別に「えっへん」でも「こほん」でもいいのですが・・。


で、この「えっへん」という音そのものですが、文字で表そうとすると ahem と書きます。

a sound like a cough that you make to attract someone’s attention, or when you are saying something embarrassing

In writing, ahem is used to show that someone is being ironic. Ahem is also used to show that someone wants to get another person’s attention.
(COBUILD)

英語のメールで *ahem* と書かれていることがありますが、まさにこれが「えっへん」ってことなんですね。


ところで、throat（のど）を英英辞典で見てみると、こんな表現がありました。


[clear your throat]
to make a noise in your throat, especially before you speak, or in order to get someone’s attention
(LDOCE)

If you clear your throat, you cough once in order to make it easier to speak or to attract people’s attention.
(COBUILD)


話をする前に、話をしやすくするために、throat を clear するんですね。

もしくは、他人の注意をちょっと引くために。

これは、咳払いをするという意味です。


ということで、your throat を clear するときの音が ahem ということですね。
