Ichinomiya, Chiba Japan (Wednesday, May25 2016): Another huge day of action has been completed at the Ichinomiya Chiba Open at Shida Point. Today saw the Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 take to the water after the Men’s QS6,000 completed Round 3 in small but clean one-to-two foot waves.

Kicking off the action was the final 10 heats of Men’s Round 3. The first winner of the day was Floridian Evan Geiselman who used his small wave prowess to impress the judges. Geiselman found the best waves of the heat to post a heat total of 14.17 (out of a possible 20).

“The waves today feel like an average day at home,” Geiselman said. “Being from Florida I surf in conditions like this a lot so I felt comfortable out there. The hardest thing to achieve when it’s like this is getting on the best waves, as they’re the ones you get scored on, so that was tough. I had fun though.”

Former Championship Tour (CT) competitor Tom Whitaker used his experience in surfing contests as he waited for the majority of the heat to find his second scoring wave. Under priority and in fourth postion, Whittaker paddled down the beach to try and find a score. In the dying seconds he was gifted a long left-hander that offered him a few nice turn sections that he went to town on, earning the score and the second progressing position, with the first going to Hawaiian Granger Larson.

“I got that first score then it sort of turned into a lake out there,” Whitaker said. “I paddled over to that bank because I’ve been seeing good ones come through there all week. I didn’t have priority and then nothing came until that last one which was a bit of a gift really. It’s always worth taking a risk in these conditions.”

Coming off a win at the Martinique Surf Pro QS3,000, Portugal’s Frederico Morais entered the water today with no other option but to win his heat. Morais posted a 7.17 (out of a possible 10) with three massive forehand turns. He then backed it up with a 6.07 and continues on into Round 4 as he aims to climb the QS rankings.

“I have the same routine for every contest regardless of the conditions,” Morias said. “The swell has dropped but the banks are good so there is still some waves for us out there and there is some really good surfing going down. Having a win recently has given me confidence to go further in this event and set up my year with a good ranking.”

The final heat of the Round was a nail-biter until the bitter end with No. 1 seed and CT competitor Keanu Asing taking on local up-and-comer Reo Inaba. Inaba got busy early, posting a 4.17 then backing it up with an excellent 8.27 for a right-hander on which he performed numerous snaps. Asing then took off on a right and smashed three huge re-entries to post the highest single wave score of the day, a 9.07. Inaba utilized his priority to keep Asing off of a couple of waves in the dying minutes, leaving Inaba to take the second qualifying position, much to the delight of the hordes of locals supporting their star from the beach.

“It’s been so good having all this support here,” Inaba said. “Coming up against Keanu was nerve-racking not only because he is so good and on the CT but he is a friend. I stay with him in Hawaii so to sit on him with priority was so hard for me, I felt really bad. I’m stoked to make the heat though.”

As the tide filled in and the afternoon conditions improved, the Ichinomiya Chiba Open Women’s QS1,000 powered all the way to deciding the finalists. It was no surprise that the events No.1 seed Reika Noro flew through the draw to book herself a spot in the final. Now residing in California, Noro has enjoyed competing back in her home country.

“The waves were tough today so I’m glad to make it into the final,” Noro said. “It’s looking like we could have good waves later in the week so hopefully the final will be an exciting one. It’s so great to be back in Japan competing.”

Ren Hashimoto was another standout on the way to the final posting big scores in each heat. She left her best till last posting an excellent heat total of 16.67 in her semifinal with some sharp backhand surfing on the longer lefts that were on offer.

“I knew that the good ones were on that left so that’s where I stayed all heat,” Hashimoto said. “I really wanted to do my best in this contest so I’m really happy that I have made it to the final. I hope the waves will be pumping.”

The Ichinomiya Chiba Open will run from May 23 – 30 and be webcast live at www.worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App.

SANTA MONICA, CA/USA (Tuesday, May 24, 2016)  - WSL Holdings, the parent company of the World Surf League (WSL), today announced an agreement in principle to acquire a majority stake in the Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC).The partnership between the WSL and KSWC will be dedicated to promoting the growth of high-performance surfing around the world. KSWC’s revolutionary technology creates a number of possibilities for the future of the sport. The WSL and the KSWC envision the build-out of a global network of WSL-branded high-performance training centers utilizing this wave technology.

For Kelly Slater, the 11-time world champion, the creation of this wave technology is the realization of a lifelong dream and a 10-year project, and today’s announcement brings his two worlds together. “While surfing for me will always be about adventure, travel and the ocean, this wave brings a new opportunity to the sport without taking away the soulfulness that attracted many of us to surfing in first place,” said Slater. “Surfing great waves in a controlled environment adds a new dimension, as there is no hassling for waves, no stress over who got the best wave – they are all good. Everyone can relax, have fun and focus on improving their surfing.”

“It’s beyond my dreams that this wave will be a canvas for the global advancement of this great sport in partnership with the WSL,” he added. “It will democratize surfing and provide incredible training opportunities for athletes as well as aspirational surfers in areas with no ocean waves.”

The WSL sanctions and organizes the highest-level professional surfing competitions for men, women, big wave, longboarders and juniors.

“The WSL proudly represents the best in men’s and women’s competitive surfing globally, and the amazing man-made wave technology developed by Kelly Slater and his team is a revolutionary innovation that has the power to dramatically enhance every aspect of our sport,” said Paul Speaker, CEO of the WSL. “We share the same vision and passion for growing high-performance surfing, and are beyond excited to work together under one roof to bring the sport to levels and places never before possible.”

KSWC technology creates an opportunity for surfers to practice and develop ever-higher levels of performance in a repeating environment, with unprecedented opportunities for surrounding camera and sensor arrays providing immediate and perfectly accurate feedback on their progress.  This is the first repeatable man-made wave that convincingly delivers the power and shape of ocean waves most sought after by accomplished surfers, including a hollow barrel allowing for long tube rides.  While high-performance surfing is the core mission of both the WSL and the KSWC, the wave technology is flexible and can also create variable waves for beginner and intermediate surfers.

WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow recently visited the first KSWC site, and said the wave surpassed his expectations. “Up until a few weeks ago, I had never ridden Kelly’s Wave, and when I did, I was blown away by the experience,” Perrow said. “It is incredible to see this wave in action — it has more energy and power than I expected and this technology holds a lot of potential for the future development of surfers just starting out and those already competing on our Championship Tour."

While competition in a man-made environment will offer previously impossible opportunities such as the creation of surrounding spectator environments, as well as certainty of scheduling, WSL CEO Speaker emphasized that nothing could ever replace the magic and mystery of world-class competition in the ocean. “We do believe that all stakeholders – athletes, fans, broadcast and corporate partners – will be super energized by the advent of Championship Tour-level competition with man-made waves,” he said, “but the ocean will always be our home, and the great waves on our tour will always remain the backbone of our competitive schedule.”

Speaker added: “No firm plans have been made for the inclusion of a man-made wave-based competition. We will be evaluating all the possibilities in the coming months with the Commissioners’ Office and the WSL athletes.”

WSL Holdings is the parent company of the World Surf League (WSL). The transaction is subject to the negotiation of mutually agreeable definitive documentation, among other customary conditions.  Both WSL and KSWC will continue to operate independently as separate entities following the closing of a transaction. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

About the Kelly Slater Wave Company
Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC) is an innovative wave technology company. KSWC is the first company to develop a formula that combines cutting edge science, engineering and design to create the longest, open-barrel, high-performance wave in existence.  The wave system can mimic the power, speed and experience found in the best ocean waves. As envisioned by 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, KSWC was created to evolve the sport of surfing by making it more accessible. The company is creating world-class, high-performance training centers where top athletes can perfect their talent. In addition, the company is looking at development applications for surfers of any level to enjoy the best man-made waves.

Caption: Guadeloupe's Tim Bisso posted the highest heat total of the day with a 17.33 out of a possible 20: WSL/Bennett

Ichinomiya, Chiba Japan (Tuesday, May 24 2016): The Ichinomiya Chiba Open has continued with another massive day of action at Shida Point. Wave sizes dropped from yesterday to two feet, but conditions stayed clean for the completion of Men’s Round 2 and 14 heats of Round 3. With Round 3 came the top seeds as some of the world’s top surfers hit the water at one of Japan’s best known surf spots.

Round 3 got underway as the tide began to bottom out and conditions became extremely tough to deal with. Bino Lopes (BRA) didn’t seem too concerned with this as he powered into the few open-faced right-handers on offer posting and impressive heat total of 16.83 (out of a possible 20) to take the heat win.

“When the conditions are like this it really comes down to luck,” Lopes said. “I felt like I was in a good rhythm and was sitting in the right place to get the good ones. Once I had the 7.83 I felt comfortable and could build on it, then I got a 9.00. The last time I surfed at this spot I felt a good connection like today, I hope that continues.”

Frenchman Marc Lacomare found himself in an elimination position for the majority of his Round 3 heat. Struggling to find a wave that offered him any good turn sections, Lacomare took off on what looked like a closeout and pulled a solid air-reverse to post a single wave score of 7.03 (out of a possible 10). He then backed it up with a 7.67 with two big backhand snaps and moved into first position.

“I was trying to get the open faced waves early but it wasn’t really working for me,” Lacomare said. “I couldn’t get a score with the turns so I found that one and it had a great air section on it so went for it and luckily landed. The few days before the comp we had really fun waves so I hope the swell builds again later in the week.”

Former Championship Tour (CT) competitor Heitor Alves was forced to surf on unfamiliar equipment after the airline lost his board bag. Alves didn’t seem too unsettled as he took off on a number of waves to feel out his borrowed equipment. He eventually found two decent waves for a heat total of 15.16 for the heat win.

“I was really nervous all week because my boards hadn’t actually arrived,” Alves said. “I got on a new board from a local shaper and wasn’t very in tune with it. Eventually I got used to it and it felt good under my feet so I’m stoked.”

Known for his massive power turns and heavy footed surfing, Wade Carmichael had the tough task of surfing against Yago Dora after his near perfect heat yesterday in small, cross-shore conditions. Carmichael wasn’t phased as he put down a some huge turns for a heat total of 15.77, eliminating the in-form Dora.

“There is always a chance that these events will be scrappy,” Carmichael said. “I was prepared for any conditions this week which is a good frame of mind to be in. regardless of the waves you can still get the best waves on offer in the heat and that’s just what I aimed to do. I didn’t really think too much about Yago’s performance yesterday. Today is a completely different day so I wasn’t too concerned.”

Last time a large-scale QS event was held in Japan it was won by Mitch Crews. Today his love affair with Shida point continued as the former CT competitor posted the highest single wave score of the day, a 9.57 with a number of solid forehand snaps.

“It’s good to be back in Japan,” Crews said. “I’m glad I got a bit more tide in my heat than the earlier ones, it doesn’t seem to be closing out as much. I was hoping the wind would still be coming from the north so I could go for front side airs but it didn’t matter to much, staying on the wave worked for me today.”

After finishing runner-up at the World Junior Championships earlier this year, Guadeloupe’s Timothee Bisso has been carrying serious momentum. This continued today as the young goofy-footer went to town on the waves on offer at Shida Point. His lightning quick surfing was rewarded with the highest heat total of the day, a 17.33.

“I went out with the plan to surf backside because all the good scores were coming from backside surfing,” Bisso said. “I didn’t really look for many lefts until those last two sets then I got that last one that had two really nice sections. I knew it would be a good score so I was stoked when I heard it was an 8.83.”

The Ichinomiya Chiba Open will run from May 23 – 30 and be webcast live at www.worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App.

Caption: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), current World No. 5 on the Jeep Leaderboard, will battle to defend her event Title at the Fiji Women's Pro.
Image: WSL / Kirstin

TAVARUA/NAMOTU, Fiji (Monday, May 23, 2016) -  The world’s best female surfers are preparing for Stop No. 5 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, the Fiji Women’s Pro, from May 29 - June 3, 2016.

Tyler Wright (AUS) currently leads the WSL Top 17 as the Jeep Frontrunner heading into the prestigious event. The young Australian’s form has been undeniable in 2016, winning three of the first four events (Gold Coast, Margaret River and Rio de Janeiro) and finishing 5th at Bells Beach.

For all her success, however, Wright is followed closely by last year’s WSL Runner-Up Courtney Conlogue (USA) and reigning three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW).

Bethany Hamilton (HAW), global sporting icon and shark attack survivor, has been allocated the WSL Wildcard for the Fiji Women’s Pro. Since her traumatic shark attack at home in 2003 in which she lost her left arm, Hamilton has become a global sporting inspiration and a bonafide world-class surfer. Particularly adept in sizable lefthand reef passes, Hamilton poses a considerable threat to the top seeds when competition gets underway.

"I am so excited to have the opportunity to be competing in the women's event at Cloudbreak,” Hamilton said. “I've been dreaming of surfing and competing there for years and I think the wave will suit my surfing! Seeing all the swell headed to Fiji has me pumped up! I know I'll have to surf strong and be heat smart to do well, I believe I can!"

Californian Lakey Peterson (USA) remains out with her ankle injury sustained pre-season. She will be replaced by Bronte Macaulay (AUS) in Fiji.

The Surfline forecast is calling for:

A decent fetch is expected to continue in the eastern half of the Tasman Sea over the weekend and then we may see another strong fetch move through for the middle of the week.

The Fiji Women’s Pro will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com as well as the WSL app.

The event is also being carried by the WSL’s LIVE broadcast partners Fox Sports Australia, CBS Sports in the United States, ESPN Brasil, Globosat, Edgesport, Sky NZ, Sport TV, Canal + Deportes, Channel Nine, MCS, Starhub, and Oceanic Time Warner Cable 250 & 1250 in Hawaii.
