MARGARET RIVER, Western Australia/AUS (Wednesday, March 29, 2017) - An exciting opening day at North Point kicked off the second stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. For the first time in WSL history, the world’s best surfers battled at the famed righthand reef-point located about 10 miles north of Margaret River in four-to-six foot (1.5 - 2 metre) conditions.

Reigning event winner Sebastian Zietz (HAW) set the bar at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro with the event's first Perfect 10. After a slow start to his match up with CT rookie Ethan Ewing (AUS) and Brazilian dynamo Filipe Toledo (BRA), Zeitz found the sort of wave North Point is known for, a long open draining tube that allowed him an exit. Zeitz cruises into Round 3, while Ewing and Toledo will battle to avoid elimination in Round 2.

“That wave was mental, just so long, and I didn’t think I was going to make it,” Zeitz said. “I knew it would be a half-decent barrel, but not that good. It’s always good to get through your first heat and earn the day off, but especially when you do it with a tube like that. I’m so stoked.”

The opening heat of Round 1 witnessed 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) take the win against three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) and rookie Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA). Slater charged into North Point barrels to claim the heat and tally a win against the Italian charger, who beat Slater at this event last year. Fanning and Fioravanti will surf again in Round 2, while Slater advances to Round 3.

“That was a really strange heat,” Slater said. “There were some solid six foot sets coming through, even the odd eight footer, but it was so inconsistent. We seemed to be out of position the whole time. We all had such low scores that the heat was anyones’s until the last minute. It was cool to meet Mick [Fanning] in an early heat and get one up on him and Leo [Leonardo Fioravanti]. Surfing here in a contest is really cool. It’s a great wave, which is rare to score, so the fact they set up here overnight is great for the competition.”

2017 CT Rookie Ian Gouveia (BRA) made as splash at North Point today with his victory over current Jeep Ratings Leader Owen Wright (AUS) and Connor O’Leary (AUS) in Heat 7. Gouveia showcased his backhand barrel technique to earn the first excellent score of the day, an 8.00 (out of a possible 10). Gouveia, who is currently ranked 13th on the Jeep Leaderboard, will advance straight to Round 3, while Wright and O’Leary are relegated to elimination Round 2.

“That was a really dreamy heat for me,” Gouveia said. “My favourite thing to do in surfing is ride backhand barrels, so having North Point with two other guys out is awesome. All of the Brazilians on tour feed off of each other and when I saw Jesse [Mendes] win, I was so stoked and just wanted to go out and get barreled.”

Event wildcard Jesse Mendes (BRA) upset the competition as he took down 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) and CT veteran Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) in Heat 5. The all-Brazilian match-up saw Mendes hold the lead for the entire heat, creating space for himself with a great wave selection and solid tube rides. Medina fired back to close the gap to a 0.01-point difference, but Mendes continued his rhythm through to his Round 1 win.

“I knew it was going to be a tough heat,” Mendes said. “My heat actually had a lot of waves and I was in the right spot. I had been surfing here all morning, so I kind of knew where to sit and kept my strategy, and it worked out. It feels awesome. I am so blessed and thankful for God. It is a beautiful day and the waves are pumping.”

Reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) flew through his heat against rookie Frederico Morais (PRT) and wildcard Jacob Willcox (AUS). Florence found his rhythm early in the heat with an authoritative 7.17 and 6.50. Willcox, who gained entry into the event after winning the trials, tried to battle back against Florence, but could not capitalize on his attempts. Morais will look to bounce back out of elimination Round 2 to maintain his run at this event.

“It’s really hard today because of the swell direction,” Florence said. “When you look out to sea, it always looks like there are waves coming but nothing eventuated, which is kind of frustrating. I learned a lot last year and am definitely applying new strategies to my heat surfing, which seems to be working. Overall, it was a slow heat but they were fun when they came.”

Caio Ibelli (BRA) continued the trend of Brazilian upsets today as he took down 2012 WSL Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Jadson Andre (BRA)  in Round 1 Heat 8. Ibelli earned a Quarterfinal finish at last year’s event and is on track to best his previous result.

2017 World Title contender Jordy Smith (ZAF) was quick to fire off two 5-point rides against Kanoa Igarashi (USA) and injury replacement Nat Young (USA). Smith continued to move through with a barrel followed by a massive air attempt, but Young challenged Smith with a solid 6.67. Under pressure, Smith charged back with a 7.83 to lock his place in Round 3.

“I knew that last one was going to be a good wave,” Smith said. “I wanted to be deep, but obviously when you have the rashie on you do not want to be too deep because you’ve got to make it count. Sure enough, I thought about it too much and got myself a little deep in the beginning, but luckily I got set up for the barrel on the inside. I was stoked when I came out of that one.”

Jeremy Flores (FRA), Kolohe Andino (USA), Jack Freestone (AUS), Michel Bourez (PYF) and Julian Wilson (AUS) also earned their tickets to skip Round 2 and advance directly to Round 3 after winning their match-ups today.

Event organizers will reconvene at 6:30 a.m. local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

Due to the extremely limited capacity at North Point and The Box, in-person press will not be tenable at these venues. An end of day press release and images will complement the VNR and live access to surfer interviews is via the WSL broadcast on WorldSurfLeague.com.

Surfline, official forecast for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, are calling for:

Solid SSW swell will trend down through the day on Thursday. A smaller, but still strong, SSW swell looks likely for Friday afternoon and Saturday before fading into early next week. Favorable wind also looks likely, especially in the mornings, for the next several days. Beyond that, there is greater uncertainty on conditions for next week. While at least medium size swells are possible, local wind may also deteriorate.

The event will be broadcast LIVE via WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL app and on Facebook LIVE via the WSL’s Facebook page. Also check the local listings for coverage on CBS Sports Network in the U.S., Fox Sports in Australia, ESPN in Brazil, Sky NZ in New Zealand, SFR Sports in France and Portugal and as part of the EDGEsport Network.

LOS ANGELES, CA/USA (Tuesday, March 28, 2017) - The list of nominees for the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards have been announced. With $350,000 in total prize money to be allotted across the seven categories and a TAG Heuer Watch for each winner, the Big Wave Awards will honor the best performances of the year, from tubes to wipeouts. Photographs and videos of all the nominated rides can be viewed at worldsurfleague.com/bigwave.

Nominated rides come from every corner of the world, including California, Tasmania, Portugal, Hawaii, Mexico and Fiji. Shortlisted surfers range from established veterans such as the newly crowned Big Wave Tour Champions Grant Baker (ZAF) and Paige Alms (HAW) to younger rising stars like Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca (BRA), Trevor Sven Carlson (HAW) and Kai Lenny (HAW).

“This year’s WSL Big Wave Awards has seen a clear push from a group of younger surfers now making their mark in the big wave arena,” said Bill Sharp, the event’s director. “Diversity is probably the theme this year, with epic paddle sessions in places like California and Mexico, then tow days in Maui or Portugal to mix it up, with the young crew willing to try whatever discipline works best for the conditions at hand. Paddling is still regarded as the gold standard, but when it’s giant and windy -- like it was at Jaws and Nazaré at times this winter -- the limits were being pushed like never before.”

Another obvious trend from this season is the continuing emergence of Nazaré in Portugal as a big wave hotbed. Virtually unknown as a big wave break until the last six or seven years, the once-sleepy fishing village earned no less than nine nominations this year, including three contenders for the TAG Heuer XXL Biggest Wave Award and two nods for the Biggest Paddle division, more than anywhere else in the surfing world.

The WSL Big Wave Awards competition window concluded on March 21, 2017 and spanned the previous 12 months of surfing action. Every wave ridden at every big wave break around the world in this period was eligible for consideration across seven categories. A panel of judges chose the five best rides in each of the categories based on photographic and video evidence.

The winners will be crowned at a gala invitation-only awards show at the Pasea Hotel in Huntington Beach, California on April 29, 2017. Viewers around the world are invited to watch the live webcast at worldsurfleague.com and live on the WSL’s Facebook page. The show will also be televised later on the CBS Sports Network in the US.

To apply for media accreditation to the event please complete the credential form on worldsurfleague.com/press-room or email press@worldsurfleague.com

The Billabong Ride of the Year is the top-line category of the event and is awarded to the surfer who demonstrates the most advanced and committed level of big wave surfing during a successful ride, as judged by available video-footage. The category carries the biggest prize of the Big Wave Awards with $75,000 for the winner, $20,000 for second place, $15,00 for third, $10,000 for fourth and $5,000 for fifth place. While the performance categories salute the most successful rides of the past year, the TAG Heuer Wipeout division presents the most amazing unsuccessful rides for online review. Video of surfing’s greatest aquatic mishaps has become a popular viral staple among surfing fans worldwide, often attracting millions of views and taking its place as a good-natured fixture in the Big Wave Awards. Truly epitomizing the courage needed for big wave surfing, the surfers nominated for this accolade show no shortage of heart and commitment. The winner of this award will receive $5,000 and the videographer who captured the wipeout will receive $2,000.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Monday, March 27, 2017) – The World Surf League (WSL) today announced the relaunching of the WSL Japan region as WSL Asia, with headquarters remaining in Japan but expanding the region’s purview to include China, Indonesia, the Maldives, the Philippines, South Korea, India, Taiwan, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

“As WSL continues to develop and promote the Asia Region, it became abundantly clear that we needed to support all the surfers in the region to ensure they have every opportunity to advance their career paths,” said Graham Stapelberg, WSL EVP/General Manager Tours. “Under the new structure all surfers in the region have an opportunity to become Regional Champion and earn important seeding to launch their careers on the Qualifying Series.”

A considerable evolution for the sport in developing and enhancing new talent from the region, the inaugural event of the WSL Asia region will be the Krui Pro 2017 in Indonesia. A men’s and women’s WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 event, the Krui Pro 2017 will be held in the wave-rich West Coast of South Sumatra from April 15 - 20 at a lefthander known locally as Ujung Bocur.

Arguably the most consistent and varied wave in the area, Ujung Bocur can hold massive swells as well as offer up a competitor's dream mix of barrels, steep walls, and air sections in small and medium conditions. The Krui Pro will be the first time ever that a professional international surfing competition has been held in the area.

“This is an historic occasion and an incredible opening competition for WSL Asia,” said Steve Robertson, WSL Asia Regional Events Manager. “The event epitomises what WSL Asia is all about - great waves, great destinations and rapidly developing professional surfers from throughout this region. We will dual sanction with the Australia/Oceania region and the field will be incredible. I’m super excited to see Indonesian, Japanese, Taiwanese, Filipino and Chinese surfers represent the Asia region and look forward to working with other countries in the region and integrating them into the tour.”

Regent Agus Istiqlal of the West Coast Regency of South Sumatra is sponsoring the competition and states, “As the regent of this area I’m very proud that we can host the Krui Pro international surfing competition this April, and we are ready to welcome the surfers from all over the world. On behalf of our community here, I want to thank the WSL and its surfers in advance for coming, and we await your arrival with excitement.”

“I’m stoked to be going to Krui for my first contest of the year,” said Dede Suryana from Indonesia, last year’s Asia Surfing Circuit (ASC) champion. “The waves there are amazing, and that left is so fun and really long, a lot like Uluwatu in fact. I was there at Ujung Bocur two years ago and got barreled a lot on that wave, so really glad to go there now for a contest, especially for a QS. Having a QS in a place like Krui will be a great opportunity to how much potential the place and all of Indonesia has for surfing and surfing contests.”

“This is our first year of being part of WSL Asia and working together with WSL International, so it’s very exciting,” said ASC’s Tipi Jabrik. “Our goal is to do events more economically using the resources that we have been developing as the ASC, and this will allow our region to continue to grow stronger and provide greater benefits to our Asian surfers. Thanks to the government of Krui especially Regent Agus Istiqlal and the Minister of Tourism Mr. Aodi Marpi for making this event happen, and for all you surfers, this wave at Ujung Bocur is a super consistent and quality lefthander, a perfect set up and a great place for a contest, so I know you’re gonna love it!”

The Krui Pro 2017 holds a competitive window of April 15 - 20. More details at worldsurfleague.com
