ビジネスパートナーのTracey（ドイツ在住、それも、パウルの水族館の近くに住んでいる！）から
ニュースレターが届いたのでお送りしますね。ちょっと前のネタだけど、状況がわかっているので英語も理解しやすいと思いますヨ。

During the 2010 World Cup, an octopus called Paul became more famous than some of the players. Paul lives in a tank in an aquarium in the German city of
Oberhausen.

Before each German match, his owners offered him two boxes with a mussel in each. One box had the national flag of Germany on it and the other box had the flag of the opposing team.

Paul is said to have predicted the outcome of the game by choosing and eating the mussel out of one of the boxes and in all seven German matches, Paul chose
correctly.

He even predicted Spain's victory over the Netherlands in the final of the World Cup.

Paul became an international sensation and many aquariums around the world made offers to give him a new home but his owners have instead decided to let Paul have a comfortable retirement.

The average life-span of an octopus is only about 3 years so he won't be aros only about 3 years so he won't be around to see the next World Cup.

Maybe next time we'll see Freddy the Psychic Fugu!

あまりにお久しぶりの記事で、恐縮ですが・・・みなさん、お元気ですか。

本の執筆が始まると、どうしても時間がとれず、ブログの更新が後手にまわってしまうんですよね。

いかん、いかん・・・。

さて、先日編集者さんから連絡があり、「やっぱりイギリス英語が好き！」の増刷が決まりました。

北アイルランドの巨人伝説　ジャイアンツ・コーズウェー

The Giant's Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Northern Ireland's
most visited tourist attraction. Owned and managed by the National trust,
it is an area of about 40000 basalt columns, the natural result of rapidly
cooling lava from a volcanic explosion 50-60 million years ago.

イギリスの最も偉大な自然の驚異が・・・これだっ！

○causeway: 土手道
○heritage: 文化遺産
○basalt: 玄武岩
○column: 柱
○lava: 火山の溶岩


Of course, Ireland being the land of story-tellers, there is also a romantic
legend to explain the presence of such unusual rock formations.
The legend says that the causeway was built by the giant Finn McCool
as a means of crossing the Irish Sea to Scotland to fight his Scottish
adversary.

フィン・マックールはアイルランドの伝説の巨人。大王コーマックを守るフィアナ騎士団の首領である

Similar basalt formations (part of the same ancient volcanic activity)
exist on the Scottish of Staffa and are interpreted as the other side of
Finn's causeway.

スコットランドのスタッファ島でも、同様の“巨人の奇跡”を目にすることができるのだ！

北アイルランドの古城　ダンルース・カッスル



The ruins of Dunluce Castle are one of the most-
visited landmarks in Northern Ireland. The history of the castle stretches
back over many centuries and is entwined with many legends and myths.

この城にまつわる伝説や神話は数知れず・・・。

○ruin:遺跡、廃墟
○stretch back: さかのぼる
○be entwinted with:絡み合う、切っても切れない仲である
○myth:神話

Situated on a rocky outcrop and surrounded on three sides by
steep drops into the sea, this spot on the rocky, northern Ulster coastline
was a natural choice for early settlers and the name "Dunluce" means
"strong fort" in Gaelic.

ダンルースとはケルト語でstrong fort、つまり「強固な砦」という
意味を表す。

○outcrop:岩礁
○steep:切り立った、断崖の
○settler:入植者

The castle has witnessed many battles and sieges, and has been
home to many different earls and chieftains, some English, some Scottish
and some Irish. In the 17th century, the cliff supporting the castle's
kitchen crumbled during a storm and the kitchen with its seven cooks tumbled
onto the rocks below.

この城は歴史の目撃者なのです。そして、7人のシェフは何処へ？

The sun setting behind the ruins is a truly romantic scene
and if Dunluce seems familiar to you, maybe you are a Led Zeppelin fan-
the castle featured on the artwork for their album "Houses of the Holy".

ロンドンの中でお気に入りのエリアがポートベロマーケット界隈。銀食器、アンティークアクセサリー、エスニックフードにチョコバーの袋買い・・・など、なんでもござれデス。

写真のアクセサリーは、マーケットの入り口付近のショップでパチリと撮ったもの（もちろん、店員さんに許可をもらっての撮影）値段は若干高めだけど、ここ、とにかくオサレなアクセサリーがいっぱいなんです。




そして、わたくしが気に入ったのがマリーアントワネット風味のこのフィギュア。



でも、たぶん、売り物じゃないんだろうナぁ。

なんか、ロンドンの空気を感じますよネ。

さっきの記事の続きといういうことで・・・スコットランドキャラをYou tubeで見つけましたので、貼り付けます。英国のユーモアを知るにはいいきっかけかも知れません。（って思っていただけたら、これ幸い）

あ、後半に出てきますが、tomatoはイギリス英語で「トマーートォ」と発音します。

まったり感たっぷりの「トメイロゥ」は米語発音ヨ。

英国の底力は、ユーモア精神にあると思う。

ＢＢＣは国営放送である。そして、この国営放送が放つ「リトルブリテン」というコメディは下品である。

なぜ、国営放送がこんなにお下劣な番組を放送するのだろう・・・。

たぶん、笑いの振り幅が広いんだと思う。

（それか、バロメーターが壊れているか・・・）

この番組では、ワーキングクラスから、アッパークラスまで、いろんな英語が聞けます。

いろんななまりやアクセントの英語があってこそ、本当のＵＫなのだと思う。

そして、いろんな英語に、いろんな下品に、いろんな高貴さを丸ごと包括して

放送しちゃえ！

といったＢＢＣの懐の深さは、カンガルーのポケットどころの騒ぎじゃないナ。

これが大英帝国であるが故のリトルに振る舞うブリテンのデカさなのだと思う。

トワイニングの紅茶セレクションにフレッシュ＆フルーティーっちゅうのがあります。

特に「フルーツ＆ハーブ」が好きなのですが、これをいただきながら、ぼーっとしてると

極楽、やわ。

ちなみにこちらはPomegranate （ザクロ） & Raspberry（ラズベリー） のフレーバー↓

あまりよく取れていないのが残念ですが・・・、実際はド派手な真っ赤！

でもこれを飲むと、なんだかとってもリラックスするので毎日のティーなタイムには

欠かせません。
