There are exceptions however, generally we add the -s to the end of the thing For example, one pen. two pens with the -s
We use This and These when we are talking something that is near. However, if the thing that we are talking about is far away We say: “What is that?”.One more time: “What is that?” And we answer,”That is a computer”.One more time: “That is a computer”.
And when you have more than one, we ask “What are those?”. One more time: “What are those?”. And we answer : “Those are computers.” “Those are computers.”
So let’s recap what we just went through. We say “ What is this?” for something that is near and only one. We answer : “This is a pen.” “This is a ruler” And if the item is far, we ask : “What is that?” “That is a pen, That is a ruler”.
But when you have more than one, and it is near, we say: “What are these?” and your answer : “These are pens” “These are rulers”
When it is far, these multiple items, many things are far We say : “What are those?” “Those are pens” “Those are rulers”.
That will be all for this video. I hope I clarified some questions for many of you This is Teacher Matt I hope to see you again. Goodbye!
Welcome to English with Teacher Matt I hope everybody is doing well. In this video I want to clarify how to ask something when you don’t know what it is.
If I see this pen and I don’t know what it is I can say : “What is this?” Again, “What is this?” The other person can answer “This is a pen”. Again, “This is a pen”. Notice the article a in front of pen. This tells me there is only one pen. A pen means one pen.
However, if there are more than one we can not say “What is this?”instead we say “What are these?”. Again,”What are these?”. Then we answer : “These are pens”.Again, “These are pens”.
We use are for plural. Means more than one. We use is when there is only one.
Also when you have more than one item.More than one thing, In English we must use the plural form.
