A farmer set up a net in his field to catch some cranes that had been constantly feeding upon his new-sown corn. When hevwent to examine the net and to see what the cranes had taken, there was a stork among
them.
"Spare me!" cried the stork. "I'm not a crane. Nor have I eaten any of your corn. As you can see, I'm a poor innocent stork, the most pious and dutiful of birds. I honor and respect my mother and father. I ー "
But the farmer cut him short. "All this may be true enough, but I only know that I've caught you with those birds who were destroying my crops, and since you were sharing their company, you must share their fate."
Birds of a feather flock together.

英文の作法

① His name is familiar to millions of people.
② He is familiar with the rules of football.
これらの熟語を単に、to の後には「人」、withの後には「事」が来ると記憶しているととんでもない間違いをすることになる。familiar は「なじみの」という意味であり、to の場合は「...とって」と考えると「...とってなじみがある」「...によく知られている」と言うことになり、be well known to に等しい。
一方、with の場合は「...に関して」と考えれば、be familiar with は「...に関してなじみがある>...に精通している」となり、too fresh とか intimate とか非難的で悪い意味でしかつかわれない。特に、米国では sexually familiar をいみする以外は使われない。(英語診断辞書/北星堂)
なを, be familiar with は「よく知っている、...に明るい」(= having a fairly good knowledge of) と言う意味にも使われ、I am familiar with the farm life. He is not very familiar with botanical names. ーの例文もある。
ただ先に述べたように be familiar with someone を使う場合は注意が必要。He is too familiar with my girlfriend. (彼はボクのガールフレンドになれなれしい) ー と思われる可能性は大である。

国土のうち大部分が砂漠で、南部国境に標高1000~1500mの山地にある。耕地は全土の3%以下で、大麦、小麦、オリーブ、トマトなどのわずかな産があり、羊、山羊の遊牧がおこなわれる。1959年ゼルテン油田の発見以降、世界有数の産油国になる。リビアの石油埋蔵量はアフリカ最大とされ、その産出量を調節しつつ、貿易収支は黒字をつづけている。1969年ガダフィーら青年将校による革命で共和国になった。そのガダフィー大佐が先日、19歳の少年によって射殺された。血みどろの大佐の映像はTVをとおして世界中に配信されたばかりである。

Most Libyans are Arabs who farm the land. Libya is also rich in oil. The country became part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire in 1500s, and was a colony of Italy from 1912 to the end ofWorld War II. It became an independent monarchy in 1952. In 1969, army officers overthrew the king and took control, and Colonel al-Qaddafi became head of the government. Since that time, Qaddafihas led a revolution in Libyan life and leaders of many nations have accused him of interfering in other countries' affairs. The Qaddafi Government came to an end at last.
