Hi Kato,

Thanks so much .. this is all so very interesting.
One of these days I'm going to take a chi gong (気功) class here at the WECC(Westend Community Centre).



I remember taking one years ago.
In the meantime, I do my yoga every day.
and have done for years.
I used to be a yoga teacher.





I go to the gym three times a week,
walk the seawall with my group every Tuesday
and swim and hike in the mountains when I get the chance.









Hopefully, this will keep me in shape for years to come!



Thomas Jefferson, one of the early USA Presidents (he penned the Declaration of Independence) and who was a very learned man, said that "every man should devote his afternoons to exercise and recreation as it is as important as reading."

In fact, he said, "It's even more important because our health is worth more than learning."
That's for sure!
He impressed me.

Of course, learning is important, too ... but who's got the time for everything?!

Wow! ... quite mysterious movements...like those of Tai chi.


Tai chi (太極拳)

T'ai chi ch'uan (simplified Chinese: 太极拳; traditional Chinese: 太極拳), often shortened to T'ai chi or Tai chi in the West, is a type of internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits.
It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity.
As a consequence, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims.
Some of t'ai chi ch'uan's training forms are especially known for being practiced at what most people categorize as slow movement.

Today, t'ai chi ch'uan has spread worldwide.
Most modern styles of t'ai chi ch'uan trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu/Hao, Wu, and Sun.

The term t'ai chi ch'uan translates as "supreme ultimate fist", "boundless fist", "great extremes boxing", or simply "the ultimate."
Note that chi in this instance is the Wade-Giles transliteration of the Pinyin jí, and is distinct from qì (or chi 氣), which means "life energy".

The concept of the Taiji ("supreme ultimate") appears in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophy, where it represents the fusion or mother of Yin and Yang into a single Ultimate, represented by the Taijitu symbol.
T'ai chi theory and practice evolved in agreement with many Chinese philosophical principles, including those of Taoism and Confucianism.

T'ai chi training involves five elements, nei gung, tui shou (response drills), sanshou (self defence techniques), weapons, and solo hand routines, known as forms (套路 taolu).
While t'ai chi ch'uan is typified by some for its slow movements, many t'ai chi styles (including the three most popular - Yang, Wu, and Chen) have secondary forms of a faster pace.
Some traditional schools of t'ai chi teach partner exercises known as "pushing hands", and martial applications of the forms' postures.

I know. 　It seemes to me that you're always writing articles in the library. 　When you are not writing, then you're watching DVDs. 　Writing and learning is important, but, as Thomas Jefferson said, every man should devote his afternoons to exercise and recreation as it is as important as reading, learning, and writing.

You sounds like my teacher in the elementary school.

Take my advice, Kato, and join my class, will you?

Yes, yes, yes,... some day, but actually, I'm a Zen practitioner. 　When I've got some spare time, I always practise Zen.

Zen is quite static to me.

Static to you, Diane?

Yes, it is. 　Not dynamic, I mean, Zen is doing nothing---sitting still. 　I don't know how it could possibly improve your health and mind.

Have you ever heard of Bodhidharma?

Yes, you told me about him the other day.


Bodhidharma

達磨（ダルマ）



Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th-6th century and is traditionally credited as the leading patriarch and transmitter of Zen to China.

According to Chinese legend, he also began the physical training of the Shaolin monks that led to the creation of Shaolinquan. However, martial arts historians have shown this legend stems from a 17th century chigong manual known as the Yijin Jing.

Little contemporary biographical information on Bodhidharma is extant, and subsequent accounts became layered with legend, but most accounts agree that he was a Tamil prince from southern India's Pallava Empire. Scholars have concluded his place of birth to be Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu.

After becoming a Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma traveled to China. The accounts differ on the date of his arrival, with one early account claiming that he arrived during the Liú Sòng Dynasty (420–479) and later accounts dating his arrival to the Liáng Dynasty (502–557). Bodhidharma was primarily active in the lands of the Northern Wèi Dynasty (386–534). Modern scholarship dates him to about the early 5th century.

Throughout Buddhist art, Bodhidharma is depicted as a rather ill-tempered, profusely bearded and wide-eyed barbarian. He is described as "The Blue-Eyed Barbarian" in Chinese texts.



The Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall (952) identifies Bodhidharma as the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism in an uninterrupted line that extends all the way back to the Buddha himself. D.T. Suzuki contends that Zen's growth in popularity during the 7th and 8th centuries attracted criticism that it had "no authorized records of its direct transmission from the founder of Buddhism" and that Zen historians made Bodhidharma the 28th patriarch of Buddhism in response to such attacks.

Yes, he was in a sense. 　He is actually depicted as a rather ill-tempered, profusely bearded and wide-eyed barbarian.



So what was he good at?

In Japan, Bodhidharma is believed to be an original grand Zen master.

Oh, is he?

He is known as "Daruma" in Japan, and every Japanese knows about him. 　If anybody doesn't know about "Daruma" in Japan, he or she is NOT a Japanese.

Is he that famous in Japan?

You bet on that, Diane. 　In Japan, almost every household used to have a "Daruma" figure in an alcove or on a shelf.





Is this the "Daruma" figure?



Yes, it is.

How come it has only one black eye---not two black eyes?

A good question, Diane...'cause the Japanese usually buy a "Daruma" figure with no black eyes.





When you have a serious wish, then you would pray to Daruma while writing a black eye on his face.





Once your wish is realized, then you will paint another black eye.





And then the "Daruma" figure will become your full-fledged talisman.



Quite interesting! 　 So his teaching is well-known in Japan, isn't it?

Oh yes, it is.

...like what?

For example, the following teaching is written in one of famous Zen scripts.


無為無事の人

(Be born-free again)




It literally means "a man who does nothing and gets involved in nothing."



...doesn't make sense to me.

I know what you mean, Diane...Zen scripts often sound meaningless, if not self-contradictory.

Doing nothing and remaining involved in nothing means that you're born-free again. 　Is that it?

You see, Diane, some people are preoccupied by their status in our society in terms of family ancestory, wealth, education, and so on. 　Bodhidharma told his disciples to throw away those superficial goodies, which would prevent them from seeing the truth of life.

I see.

One of his diciples said, "Master, I'm free from all the goddies." 　Then Bodhidharma said to him, "No, you are not...'cause you're even chained by your belief of being free from all the goddies."

So Bodhidharma was a very sarcastic person, wasn't he?

Yes, Diane, you're telling me. 　Once Bodhidharma went too far.

In what way?

Sitting still, Bodhidharma faced the rock wall for nine years.

Well, that's not so extraordinary, Kato...'cause, in our Christian history, one of the saints lived on the top of the pillar for more than 30 years.


Saint Simeon



Saint Simeon Stylites or Symeon the Stylite (c. 390 – 2 September 459) was a Christian ascetic saint who achieved fame because he lived for 39 years on a small platform on top of a pillar near Aleppo in Syria.

Several other stylites later followed his model (the Greek word style means pillar).

He is known formally as Saint Simeon Stylites the Elder to distinguish him from Simeon Stylites the Younger and Simeon Stylites III.




Yes, I know that, Diane...I learned about him in the European history. 　However, one of Bodhidharma's disciples went much too far.



In what way?





While Bodhidharma was facing the rock wall, Huike （慧可:えか） visited him and asked the grand master to teach him. 　 Bodhidharma initially refused to teach Huike.



I suppose, Huike didn't give up, did he?

No, he didn't. 　Huike stood in the snow outside Bodhidharma’s cave all night until the snow reached his waist. In the morning Bodhidharma asked him why he was there and Huike replied that he wanted a teacher to "open the gate of the elixir or universal compassion to liberate all beings".

Then what did the grand master say?

Bodhidharma refused, saying, “how can you hope for true religion with little virtue, little wisdom, a shallow heart, and an arrogant mind? It would just be a waste of effort.” 　 Finally, to prove his resolve, Huike cut off his left arm and presented it to the First Patriarch as a token of his sincerity at which point Bodhidharma accepted him as a student and changed his name from Shenguang to Huike (“Wisdom and Capacity”).

My goodness! 　 ... Huike went too far.

The story continies, Diane. 　Without realizing that he had just self-amputated his left arm, Huike screamed in pain and then said to Bodhidharma, “My mind is anxious. Please pacify it.” 　Bodhidharma replied, “Bring me your mind, and I will pacify it.” Huike said, “Although I’ve sought it, I cannot find it.” “There,” Bodhidharma replied, “I have pacified your mind.”

I see...What a sarcastic master Bodhidharma was! 　So, an anxious mind didn't exist in the first place, did it?

You're right on, Diane.

But, Kato, what are you practising?

A good question! 　While I sit still, I'm trying not to have an anxious mind. 　This practice indeed improves my health and mind---much more than devoting my afternoons to exercise and recreation.

Wow! ... what an extreme life style!
Can you believe that a man could live on the pillar for 39 years?
Do you really believe that a man cut off his left-arm to show his sincerity?

As you know, I desperately want to meet my better half.
But when I meet a man like Saint Simeon or Huike, and he proposes to marry me, I'd rather remain single.

In any case, I've never met my "Romeo"---a decent man in my life.
How come I'm always a loner?
I wish I could meet a nice gentleman at the library in my town as Diane met Kato.
Well, they say, there is a way where there is a will.

Hi, I'm June Adames.

You might wonder why Saint Simeon decided to live on the top of the pillar.

Well...an ever-increasing number of people came to see him for prayers and advice.

This left him little if any time for his private austerities.

So he decided to climb up the pillar and formed a small platform at the top so that he could remain undisturbed.

Since he couldn't escape the world horizontally, he tried to escape it vertically.

For sustenance, small boys from the nearby village would climb up the pillar and pass him small parcels of flat bread and goats' milk.

In any case, to an ordinary man, living at the top of pillar is unthinkable.

If you determine to do the same nowadays, you are more than likely to be considered as the most foolish person in the world.

Midnight in Vancouver

Midnight in Paris





Gil and Inez



Diane, did you enjoy the film "Midnight in Paris"?



Oh, yes, definitely. 　It was marvellous and quite fascinating.

What made you so fascinated?

Well..., it's like a time-machine story. The protagonist is a male writer called Gil, who is writing his first novel. 　His fiancée is called Inez.

Is she pretty and charming?

Well..., whether she is beautiful or not doesn't matter, Kato. 　Anyway, both of them are in Paris. 　One night, after a wine tasting and being a little drunk, Gil walks back to his hotel through the streets of Paris, but eventually he gets lost. 　As he stops at a set of stairs, nearby bells chime midnight.

...sounds like a male Cinderella story, doesn't it?

Something like that, but not quite. 　Only midnight chime is in common.

Then what happens?

Suddenly, an antique car pulls up, and to his surprise, the passengers turn out a group of champagne-drinking party-goers dressed in 1920s clothing. 　They all urege Gil to join them.

Does he step into the car?

Oh, yes, of course, he does because Gil admires and idolizes the 1920s in his novel.

So, Gil has been transported to the 1920s, hasn't he?





Yes, he has. 　Gil encounters Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, and Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, and they take Gil to meet Ernest Hemingway, who agrees to show Gil's novel to Gertrude Stein, and Gil goes to fetch his manuscript from his hotel. 　However, as soon as he leaves the bar, he finds he has returned to 2010.



Oh, that's too bad for Gil.

But not really so because the same situation happens again the following midnight when Gil attempts to bring his fiancée, Inez, to the past, but she greets his excitement with annoyance and boredom, and peevishly returns to the hotel. Just after she leaves, the clock strikes midnight and the car pulls up again, this time with Hemingway inside it. He takes Gil to meet Gertrude Stein, who agrees to read his novel and introduces him to Pablo Picasso and his's mistress Adriana, a strikingly beautiful student of couture to whom Gil is instantly attracted.

Wow!...sounds quite interesting and fascinating.

So, that's the reason I really want you to see the film, Kato.

Oh, yes, I'd love to see it.

Kato, you're talking about "Midnight in Vancouver," aren't you? 　How come you've just brought up "Midnight in Paris"?



'Cause, when I boarded JAL017 for Narita on September 27, I happened to notice the movie title---"Midnight in Paris" on the Menu of the Japan Airline Inflight Entertainment Network. 　You see, we talked about it back in August. 　But, I didn't have enough time to look for the DVD and view it.

So, you viewed "Midnight in Paris" on the flight for Japan, didn't you?

Yes, I did. 　It was quite interesting, and I really enjoyed it.

That's great. 　What impressed you most, Kato?

Well..., Diane, you talked about the first half about the movie, didn't you?

Yes, I did.

The last half interested me greatly.

What about it?

Well..., Gil meets Picasso's mistress, Adriana, in the past and comes to like her very much. Later in reality, Gil and Inez go to the flea market on the outskirts of Paris. While Inez shops for furniture, Gil meets Gabrielle, a charming antiques dealer who shares his fondness for the twenties. Gil later discovers Adriana's diary from the 1920s in a used book stall on the Seine and, with the aid of a friendly tour guide at the Musée Rodin to translate it, finds out that she was in love with him. Reading that she dreamt of receiving a gift of earrings from him and then making love to him, Gil attempts to steal a pair of earrings from Inez to give to Adriana but is thwarted by Inez's early return from a trip.

So, Gil cannot give Adriana the earrings, can't he?



No, he can't, but later Gil purchases earrings for Adriana and, returning to the past, confesses his love for her. As they kiss on a deserted street, a horse and carriage appears. They are invited inside by a richly-dressed couple and are transported back to the Belle Époque, an era Adriana considers Paris's Golden Age. They are taken to the famous Maxim's Paris restaurant, and meet Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and Edgar Degas. When Gil asks what they thought the best era was, the three determine that the greatest era was the Renaissance.

Yes, yes, yes,...that's right. I remember the scene.

The enthralled Adriana is offered a job designing ballet costumes, and proposes to Gil that they stay, but Gil realizes that despite the allure of nostalgia, it is better to accept the present for what it is. Adriana elects to stay in the past, and they sadly part ways.

Yes,...that's the sad moment, isn't it?

Yes, it is. 　Later, Gil retrieves his novel from Gertrude Stein, who praises his progress as a writer but questions why the main character has not realized that his fiancée (based on Inez) is having an affair with a pedantic character. Gil returns to the present and confronts Inez. She admits to sleeping with the pedantic man but claims that it can be forgotten when they return to California. Gil breaks up with Inez and decides to remain in Paris. Taking a walk at midnight, he unexpectedly meets Gabrielle, and offers to walk her home.

So, Kato, the breakup scene impressed you the most of all, didn't it?



No, not the breakup scene, but the beginning of the new love between Gil and Gabrielle who, like Gil, is fond of the twenties. You see, Gil thought that he had found the better half, but he learned that his fiancée, Inez, had been having an affair with another man in Paris. The last scene suggests that Gil has found his real better half.

I see... So, Kato, you think, Gabrielle is going to be his new better half. Is that it?



Yes, I do. 　While I was enjoying my stay in Japan, I received your mail.

... hope you're really enjoying your stay in Japan.
I haven't seen many of the old regulars here lately; they're probably all out enjoying this lovely fall weather.

At any rate, you'll be back the end of the next week so hopefully I'll see you then.
I won't actually be going to Joe Fortes Library very much any more.



I met this lovely man a few months ago; he's intelligent, kind, witty and thoughtful.

He's widowed & retired like myself and lonely just like I was.
He just bought half of a beautiful house in Kitsilano.
It's a lovely neighbourhood and close to the beach and all and he's been trying to talk me into coming to live with him, inasmuch as we have a great time together and have mutual values & interests and chemistry as well.



I've been considering it carefully and now feel it would be a great move for both of us.
He suggested I could keep my place and see how it goes for a while, which I think is a good idea really.

So I consented on Tuesday and I'm moving tomorrow... at least my clothes and books and violin and food and such; it's ALL so exciting!



What an adventure!
I will, however, be in the westend every Thursday as it's my yoga day/volunteer day/piano lesson day and such and then I could water my plants and do any chores and girl-stuff and sleep over and go to my regular gym on Friday morning to see my friends.

All of this to say I hope to see you on Thursdays if you're here then.
Who knows how life will change, true?
Next thing we know, you'll be moving in with a lovely flamenco dancer!



Wouldn't that be fun, now?

Oh no, I'm certainly not. 　Don't misunderstand me. 　I'm just telling you that nobody is perfect.

No, no, no..., Diane...don't jump to that conclusion.

What are you getting at then?

Well..., listen to me, Diane, you're one of my best lady friends, and I admire you and trust your judgement. 　However, there are ups and downs in anybody's life. 　Steve Jobs said, "Stay hundry, stay foolish!" 　But I'd say, "Stay open-minded, stay smart!"

...sounds good to me. But you have not yet talked about "Midnight in Vancouver," have you?

No, not yet.

Whatever happens to you, Diane, I think you should be able to mend your relationship.

Have you ever wondered when Halloween guising started?

As you know, children disguised in costume go from door to door for food or coins.

It is a traditional Halloween custom.

The guising is recorded in Scotland at Halloween in 1895, where masqueraders in disguise carrying lanterns made out of scooped-out turnips, visited homes to be rewarded with cakes, fruit and money.

The practice of Guising at Halloween in North America is first recorded in 1911, where a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario reported children going "guising" around the neighborhood.

あらっ。。。面白そうですわね。　私もDVDを借りて観てみますわ。



アル・パチーノの演技が見事でしたよ。　チャーリー役のクリス・オドネルもうまい役者だと思いました。

。。。で、今度私がバンクーバーへ行ったらバンクーバーホテルのボール・ルームでデンマンさんは私とタンゴを踊ってくださるのですか？

そうですよ。　うへへへへへ。。。







でも私はタンゴを踊れませんわ。



僕が教えますよ。

あらっ。。。デンマンさんはタンゴをマジで踊れるのですか？

一応タンゴ、ルンバ、マンボ、ジルバ、チャチャチャ、ブルース、。。。などをムキになって大学時代にならったのですよ。　これでも学生時代には数え切れないほどダンスパーティーを冷やかしに行ったものです。　うししししし。。。

マジで。。。？

だから、その成果を今度小百合さんがバンクーバーにやって来たら見せますからね。。。

でも、なんだか恥ずかしいですわ。　失敗しそうで。。。

あのねぇ～、映画の中で主人公とタンゴを踊ったドナも「失敗しそうでちょっと怖いのですわ。。。」と言うのですよ。　





ドナは、ほとんどタンゴを知らなかった。　でもねぇ、タンゴもルンバもジルバも男のリードしだいで女性があまり踊れなくても、なんとか様になるものなのですよ。　数え切れないほどダンスパーティーをこなした僕が経験から言うのだから小百合さんも信じてね。。。



デンマンさんはマジで社交ダンスにハマッてぇダンスパーティーを渡り歩いたのですか？

うへへへへへ。。。半分冗談ですよ。　でもねぇ～、小百合さんとタンゴを踊る程度の経験はありますからね。　それにバンクーバーならば有名なダンスバンドがある。　バンクーバーに１０年以上住んでいて　Dal Richards Orchestra　を知らないと“モグリ”だと言われかねない。　それ程　Dal Richards　は音楽界では有名ですよ。







とにかく素晴らしいバンドですよ。　この上のビデオクリップを見ただけでも素晴らしさが分かります。



このバンドがバンクーバーホテルのボール・ルームで演奏するのですか？

そうです。　毎年クリスマスイブには必ずクリスマス・ダンスをやりますよ。

でも、クリスマスにバンクーバーに行くのは無理ですわ。

それは残念だなあああァ～。。。仕方ないから夢で小百合さんとタンゴを踊りますよ。　なんと言っても映画のタイトルが「夢の香り」ですからねぇ～。。。うししししし。。。

へえ。。。ゆかしてもらいますう。

あれっ。。。それは。。。それは。。。あのなァ～。。。急にそないな事を言われても、わてが困るやないかいなァ。

そやけど、あんさんは小百合さんにも急に言い出したやおまへんかア！

それは。。。それは。。。小百合さんがクリスマスにきよらんことを、わては前もって知っていたさかいになァ。

あんさんは、行田の実家へ帰省したのに小百合さんには会（お）うても、わたしにはおうてくれへんかった。

あのなァ～。。。小百合さんはベンツに乗って行田まで来てくれるのやァ。　行田から大阪までは遠いのやでぇ～。。。わては車を持ってへんのやァ。

そいなら、わたしはフェラリに乗って大阪から行田まで飛んでゆきましたがなァ。　

あれっ。。。フェラリってぇ飛行機も作っておるのんかァ～？

じゃっかましい！！。。。あんさんは何が何でもわたしに会いたくないねん。

そないなことがあるかいな。　なんべんも言うように、わては大川（旧淀川）で船渡御（ふなとぎょ）が行われた晩に、めれちゃんと会（お）うたやないかいなァ～。

それっ。。。いつのことォ～。。。

いつのことってぇ～、めれちゃんが桜の花びらを散らした花も恥らう１６歳のときのことやないかいなァ～。　めれちゃんは、その時の思い出を短歌に詠んでいたでぇ～

わたしがァ～。。。？

そうやがなァ～。。。もう忘れてしもうたのか？。。。次の短歌を詠んでいたやないかいなァ！

あんさんは、何度も何度もこの短歌を持ち出してきよるけど、これは３年も前に詠んだものですやん。　いつまでも昔のことを蒸し返して欲しくないねん。



さよかァ～。。。

わたしはバンクーバーで、あんさんとタンゴを踊りたいねん。

そやけど、めれちゃんはタンゴが踊れるのかァ～？

あんさん！。。。何をぬかしてけつかんねん。　あんさんは小百合さんに次のように言うてますやん。

めれちゃんはこないにエゲツナイことを言うてたのやでぇ～。。。この上のババアというのが小百合さんのことやんかァ。



あんさんは、どないな訳で昔の事を蒸し返しやはるのォ～？

めれちゃんは昔の事と言うけれど、まだ３年前のことやでぇ～。。。

ネットで３年は一昔だと、あんさんは言いましたやんかァ！

確かにネットで３年は一昔やァ。　そやけどなァ～、人間関係で３年前はそれほど昔のことではあらへん。

そいで結局あんさんは何が不満やのォ～？

あのなァ～、めれちゃんにババアと言われながらも、小百合さんは、わてとめれちゃんが短歌の交換をしているのを知っていたのや。　それで次のような健気（けなげ）な事を書いていたのやでぇ～。。。




デンマンさんへ

３月のホワイトデー前頃に買って１ヶ月が経ってしまいます。

どこで買ってもチョコなのですが

ちょうどこのホテルのチョコを見つけたので送ります。

もしかすると日本の郵便局で暖められたり、

機内で冷やされたり

表面が白くなってたらすいません。

その他、いろいろと雑に入れましたが。。。

マメ、ガム、Pinky　は　最近気に入って、

カバンに入れて持ち歩いてます。

デンマンさんの迷惑そうな顔が思い浮かびますが、

たまには女の子の気分になってみてくださいね。



うららかな春のバンクーバーの街を歩きながら。。。

フードストアに向かう買いものついでにかんでください。

小百合さんは、あんさんがわたしにそっぽを向かれたことを知ってはったのやァ。　そいで、いつまでもねちねちとわたしのお尻を追いかけないようにと言うてはるねん。



うん、うん、うん。。。確かにそうやなァ。。。そやから、めれちゃんもバンクーバーにやって来て、わてとタンゴを踊ることはないやんかァ！

あんさん！。。。話を摩（す）り替えんで欲しいねん。　昔の事は昔の事、わたしはバンクーバーへ行ってタンゴを踊りたいねん。

それほどタンゴに拘（こだわ）るならばDVDを借りてきて"Scent of A Woman　（夢の香り）"を観ればええやん。

それでは飽きたらへんから、わたしはバンクーバーへゆきたいねん。

つまり、すべてを水に流して仲直りしたいんやなァ。

そのように受け取ってもらってもええですう。

でもなァ、バンクーバーは寒いでぇ～。。。

そやからタンゴを踊ってぬくもりたいのですがなァ～。。。

タンゴを踊ったぐらいではぬくもらへん。　無駄な事はせんほうがええでぇ～。

わたしはイングリッシュ・ベイ（English Bay）で元旦に寒中水泳をする覚悟でおりますさかいに寒さは気になりまへん。

めれちゃんはどないな訳でそれほどタンゴにこだわるねん？

バンクーバーでのわたしは、

エスコートされて、
のびのびした表情をしていますね。
ここ大阪では考えられません。

あたしの精神年齢は
32歳ですか？
大人ですね。
昔から思索にふけることが
多かったのですが、
そういった時に、
わたしは大人に
なれるのかもしれません。

でも、妄想にふける
中学生のわたしもいますが。
もうひとつ言えば、
不安にさまよう
4歳のわたしもいます。

こんにちは。ジューンです。

タンゴはポピュラー音楽の一つですけれど

元々はカンドンベ、ミロンガ、ハバネラなど

複数の音楽が混ざり合って19世紀半ばに

ブエノスアイレス、モンテビデオ近辺の

ラ・プラタ川流域で生まれたとされています。

日本では、タンゴがヨーロッパに渡って

変化したものをコンチネンタル・タンゴないし

「ヨーロッパ・タンゴ」と呼びます。

それに対して元来のものを

アルゼンチン・タンゴと呼んで

区別することが多いようです。

日本でのタンゴの普及は、戦前、アルゼンチンから

一部移入がされたものの、

その後戦後にかけて移入したのは、

むしろヨーロッパからムード音楽の一環として伝わった、

いわゆる「コンチネンタル・タンゴ」の類でした。

つまり、競技ダンス・社交ダンスで用いられる

一ジャンルのタンゴのための舞踊音楽でした。

そのため、長らくタンゴと言えば

マランド、アルフレッド・ハウゼといった

イメージで受け取られました。

でも、いったん上記の競技ダンスや社交ダンスが

下火になっていた1980年代後半、

米国で成功した「タンゴ・アルヘンティーノ」公演が

日本にも移入し、これ以降、

アルゼンチン・タンゴが普及するようになったのです。

Hi, Diane.

How's it going?
I arrived at Vancouver Airport at 9:48 AM this morning---the Japan time was 1:48AM on October 28.
The attendant said it was four degree, but no clouds covered the sky. It was a fine and clear morning.

When I left Tokyo, it was 18 degree at 5:40 PM.
What a difference!



It was one of the best autumn days in Tokyo as well as in Vancouver.
The flight time was 8 hours.

I viewed four videos during the flight without a sleep, and arrived at the airport before finishing the fourth video.
When I returned to my apartment, I went to bed because I was too tired and sleepy since I stayed up for almost 30 hours.
Although I tried to get up before 5 PM, I couldn't, and woke up at 5:40 PM.

After taking a shower, I came to Joe Fortes.
It was 6:10 PM and couldn't see you.
You would say, "Kato, you aren't dependable!"

Well...sorry to miss you at Joes Fortes.
In any case we are both in Vancouver now.
Isn't that great?
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ...



I'll start my old habit and work at Joe Fortes every day :)

I viewed four movies, one of which is titled "Letters to Juliet." 　That is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life.

Letters to Juliet



Letters to Juliet is a 2010 American romantic comedy drama film starring Amanda Seyfried, Chris Egan, Vanessa Redgrave, Gael García Bernal, and Franco Nero.
This was the final film of director Gary Winick before he died of brain cancer.
The film was released theatrically in North America and other countries on May 14, 2010.
The idea for the film was inspired by the 2006 non-fiction book, "Letters to Juliet", by Lise Friedman and Ceil Friedman, which chronicles the phenomenon of letter writing to Shakespeare's most famous romantic heroine.

Plot

Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is a young American woman who works for The New Yorker as a fact checker.
To put some spark in her life, she decides to go on a 'pre-honeymoon' with her chef fiancé Victor (Gael García Bernal) to Verona, Italy.

However the workaholic Victor is unmoved by the romance of Italy and utilizes his time to rather do research for his soon-to-open restaurant, ignoring Sophie.
The lonely Sophie discovers by chance an unanswered "letter to Juliet" by a Claire Smith from 1957—one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover's Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by the "secretaries of Juliet".
She answers it and soon enough the now elderly Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) arrives in Verona with her handsome barrister grandson Charlie (Chris Egan), who works for human rights.

Claire and Sophie take an instant liking to each other with Charlie behaving very brusquely with Sophie while she is very sarcastic with him.
On the other hand, Claire is still looking to rediscover her long lost love, Lorenzo Bartolini (Franco Nero).
Sophie, thinking Claire's story might help her with her writing career, decides to help Claire in her quest.

What happens next is a story of romantic twists and turns.
They find out that there are multiple Lorenzo Bartolinis and must figure out which one is Claire's love.
After many days of searching for the right one, they find that one of the Lorenzo Bartolinis is dead.
An angry Charlie blames Sophie for his grandmother's sadness.
He accuses her of not knowing what real loss is, which causes an upset Sophie to walk away.
Claire, seeing the little dispute, tells Charlie that he was wrong and that Sophie's mother had walked away from her when she was a little girl.

The next day, Claire insists that Charlie apologize to Sophie at breakfast, and he does.
After dinner, Sophie goes out with Charlie and talks to him about love, when he impulsively kisses her.
The next morning, is their last day of searching for Claire's long lost love. On a whim, Claire points out a vineyard to Charlie and asks if he could stop by so the three of them can have a farewell drink for Sophie.
As Charlie drives down the road, Claire sees a young man who looks exactly like her Lorenzo.
She yells at Charlie to stop, and he complies.
They discover that the man is Lorenzo Bartolini's grandson.
Claire and Lorenzo reunite after fifty long years.

Back in New York, Sophie breaks up with Victor before returning to Verona to attend Claire and Lorenzo's wedding.
She finds Charlie there with another woman, Patricia, and runs out.
Charlie comes to find her (in a classic balcony setting) and she admits she loves him, but tells him to go back to his date.
Telling Sophie that the woman was actually his cousin Patricia, not his ex-girlfriend Patricia, he tells her he loves her and wants to be with her.
He accidentally falls off the balcony and they kiss as he is lying on the ground.

Hi, I'm June Adames.

Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity.

Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582.

Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris.

Believed written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597.

This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.

Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera.

During the Restoration, it was revived and heavily revised by William Davenant.

David Garrick's 18th-century version also modified several scenes, removing material then considered indecent, and Georg Benda's operatic adaptation omitted much of the action and added a happy ending.

Performances in the 19th century, including Charlotte Cushman's, restored the original text, and focused on greater realism.

John Gielgud's 1935 version kept very close to Shakespeare's text, and used Elizabethan costumes and staging to enhance the drama.



In the 20th century the play has been adapted in versions as diverse as MGM's comparatively faithful 1936 film, the 1950s stage musical West Side Story, and 1996's MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet.

イングリッシュ・ベイ（English Bay）の遊歩道のベンチに座ってますよ。
左手にバラードブリッジ（Burrard Bridge）が見え、その下をずっと左手の方にフォールス・クリーク（False Creek）が伸びてます。





対岸にはプラネタリウムの屋根が見えカナダの国旗が風速３メートルぐらいの風になびいてます。
いつもよりも風が強い。

雲一つ無い抜けるように青い空が太平洋を越えて日本の方へどこまでも、どこまでも広がってゆくようです。
対岸の空にはパラグライダーが浮かんでいるけれど、上空では風が強すぎるのか？
そのグライダーに乗っている人は見えません。



どうやら地面に固定されて風が収まるのを待ているようです。
パラシュートだけが凧のように浮かんで揺れてます。

気温は天気予報によると２４度まで上がるとか。。。
いつになく風が強いので体感温度は１８度ぐらい。
でも日差しはかなりきつい。
T-シャツと短パンで、かなり肌が露出しているので、すでに日に晒されて肌が焼ける匂いが仄（ほの）かにしています。



今朝は８時半にマンションを出て、イングリッシュ・ベイの遊歩道をセカンドビーチ（Second Beach）まで歩いて、その側の芝生の上で『ヌナブト』（著者：　磯貝日月）を読み始めました。
昨日（７月３１日）の日曜日はGay Pride Paradeでウェストエンド（West End）はかなりの賑わいでした。



パレードが行われた通りには紙くずがかなり散らばっており、市の清掃車が３台ぐらい出てきれいにしていました。

今日、８月１日は　BC Day　で休日です。　つまり、３連休です。
普通ならば土曜日、日曜日でも図書館のパソコンが使えるのだけれど、３連休ということで７月３１日と８月１日は図書館は閉館。
そう言う訳でパソコンもネットも使えない。
それで自由時間がたくさんできたので今日はイングリッシュ・ベイでのんびりと本でも読もうと思い立ったわけ。

セカンドビーチの近くのトイレを使ってからローンボーリング（Lawn Bawling）場の脇の芝生に場所を移して
直径１メートルぐらいの切り株の上に腰を下ろして『ヌナブト』の続きを読む。
ランチのつもりで持ってきたバナナを２本食べてしばらくしたら、またトイレに行きたくなり、
その後で、また場所を移して今居るベンチにやってきた次第。
本を読むのも退屈したので、こうして小百合さんにメールを書き始めたというわけです。（微笑）



今夜には、今年の夏、２回目の花火大会があるらしい。
花火打ち上げ用のバージ（浮き船）が２艘つながって１００メートルほど沖合いに浮かんでます。

Gay Pride Paradeは毎年行われているけれど、たいてい見ません。
でも、昨日はパソコンが使えなかったので５年ぶりに、すぐ側のデンマン・ストリート（Denman Street）へ見に行きました。
祭りの少ないバンクーバーでは、現在名物になりつつありますよ。
５年前に比べるとパレードの長さも２倍になり見物人も２倍ぐらいに増えました。
山車（フロート）は、それほど奇抜なモノはなくて、トラックなどに飾りを施した簡単なものです。
でも、日本と違うのは、ロックやポップミュージックをボリュームを上げて流し、パレードをする人も見物人も音楽に合わせて盛り上がり、中には踊りまくる見物人も結構居ます。







変わったところでは、今年は全裸になった６０歳ぐらいの爺さんが居ましたよ。　きゃははははは。。。
なぜかナップサックを背負っていた。
なぜ？
でも、６０歳のジジイの全裸を見てもウザイだけですよ。（苦笑）





２０歳の美女の全裸ならば盛り上がると思うのだけれど、残念ながら女性のヌードは一人も現れなかった。
ただし、トップレスになってみごとなオッパイを披露しながら踊りまくっていた女性が３人居ましたよ。
どの女性も実にみごとでした。　きゃはははは。。。

小百合さんは軽井沢ですか？
それとも伊豆の別荘ですか？
あるいは栃木の田舎の山小屋とか。。。？



森や林の中でミンミンゼミがジージー、ミンミン鳴いていますか？

脂汗をタラタラたらし、セミの鳴き声を聞きながら茹（う）だるような暑さの中で「冷し中華」を食べた子供の頃の日本の夏がマジで懐かしいですよ。
２０年以上カナダに居るのにセミの鳴くのを聞いたことが無い。
イマイチ夏らしくない！





暇ができたら、行田の大長寺にでも足を運んでみてね。
ゼリーフライでも食べてから
林で鳴くミンミンゼミの声を僕の分まで聞いてきてください。
小百合さんも素晴らしい夏休みを過ごせるよう祈ってます。

デンマンさん...久しぶりにパソコンから離れて夏休みをエンジョイしたようですわね？



そうなのです。。。強い日差しに当たりすぎて両腕と太腿がヒリヒリしているのですよ。　考えてみたら６時間ぐらい日中の日差しを受けていましたからね。

私がバンクーバーに居た頃にはGay Pride Paradeってなかったと思うのですけれど。。。

いや。。。今年で１５回目らしいから小百合さんが隣町のバーナビーにやって来ていた頃でもパレードをやっていたのですよ。　でもねぇ、１０年程前には今ほど有名ではなかった。　だから小百合さんは知らないのですよ。

セカンドビーチ（Second Beach）やローンボーリング場（Lawn Bowling Green）って、スタンレー公園のどこにあるのですか？

小百合さんのために地図を描きましたから見てください。





こうして地図を眺めていると懐かしくなりますわ。



そうでしょう！？。。。小百合さんもバンクーバー図書館でのんびりしたこともあったのですからね。





そうでしたわ。



今度小百合さんがバンクーバーにやって来た時には、ぜひ美術館の裏の青空喫茶でべーグルサンドイッチを食べながら懐かしい思い出話などを語り合いたいものですよ。











そうですわね。。。私もいつか夏にバンクーバーを訪れてGay Pride Paradeを見てみたいですわ。



でも、小百合さんが期待するほど面白くないですよ。

「百聞は一見にしかず」ですわ。　やっぱり一度は見てみないことには。。。

夏のお祭りを思い出すと、やっぱり日本の「阿波踊り」が一番ですよ。

デンマンさんにとって、それほど「阿波踊り」が懐かしいのですか？

そうですよ。。。懐かしくなって過去のメールを読んでいたら「阿波踊り」が出てきましたよ。

昨日は、思い出を作ってくれてありがとう！
鰻重（うなじゅう）はうまかった。
あのキモのお吸い物は生まれて初めて飲みましたよう。



昨日、東行田駅から家に帰る途中で「かどや」に寄って焼きそばを４人前買いました。
ちょうどおばさんが行田病院へ行って留守でした。
お昼ごろ病院に行って帰ってきたのが５時ごろで、
４人前の焼きそばを包んでくれましたが、
作るのには間に合わなかった。
おじさんが作りました。
でも、同じ味でした。

それにしても、病院は大混雑だったとか？？
お昼から５時までかかるのだから、日本は病人天国、いや、病人地獄？になったのか？

初めて、あの１０１歳のおばあさんと話をしました。
あんなに元気な１００歳以上のおばあさんを見るのは初めてでしたよう。
元気ですよね！
ビックリしましたよう。
明治４１年生まれですからね。

家に帰ってさっそくお袋と焼きそばを食べました。
小百合さんに鰻重をご馳走になったことを話題に出して。。。

ムシの知らせと言うのでしょうか！？
小百合さんから、まもなく電話がありました。
珍しく電話機のそばに居たお袋が出たのだけれど、
小百合さんの名前を覚えていたらしく、「デンマンがご馳走になったそうで、ありがとう」と言うのが聞こえました。

ブログ以外のことでは、小百合さんの事をお袋には、ほとんど話しているのですよう。
お袋は最近、物忘れが激しくなったけれど小百合さんのことは、よく覚えているようです。

■『ムカついているの？』

小百合さんもムカつくことがあるけれど、
めれんげさんのムカつきとは本質的に違うんだよね。

どのように違うの？

上の記事を読むと、それが理解できますよう。

夕べはNHKの深夜番組で『日本の祭り２００９』の「阿波踊り」を観ましたよう。
午前１時１０分から３時１２分まで。
８月２１日の再放送で２時間番組でした。

解説は前半が娯茶平連の連長さん、後半が天水連の連長さん。
ゲストは朝ドラ「ウェルかめ」の出演者で倉科カナさん、羽田美智子さん、星野知子さんの３人。
藍場浜演舞場と両国での輪踊りを中継。
映し出されたのは蜂須賀連、扇連、悠久連、うきよ連、娯茶平連、うずき連、天水連、阿呆連、無双連、ゑびす連、かずら連。



確か番組の殿（しんがり）に出てきたと思うのだけれど、阿呆連の踊りが一番印象に残りました。
自由で、躍動的で実に良かった。
お祭りっていいよね。
観ていると“日本人の血”が踊り出しますよう。
やっぱり、僕は日本人だと、しみじみと感じました。

400年の伝統・鍛え抜かれた技と美。
臨場感たっぷりの2時間。
う～♪～ん・・・
まさに、その通りでした。

小学生から初老の男女まで、みな熱くなって一生懸命に踊っていたのが伝わってきましたよう。
日本人の元気の源（みなもと）を感じて、僕も元気をもらいました。

「かずら連」の解説で踊る人の浴衣のすそに描かれていた“かずら橋”を見て急に思い出が鮮明に蘇（よみがえ）りました。
あああア～、なつかしい！
３０年前に訪れた祖谷川（いやがわ）に沿ったカーブの多い一車線の道は忘れられない。
まかり間違えば、祖谷渓谷に落ちて死にそうなスリルを感じてゾクゾクとしたものでした。
世界に飛び出す前に、まだ行ったことのない四国に行ってみたい。
そう思って選んだ場所が“かずら橋”でした。



秋には紅葉の景色が見事だと聞いていたけれど、行ったのは確か夏休みだったと思う。
紅葉には記憶がない！
弘法大師が祖谷に来たとき困っている村民のために架けたと言う伝説。
平家の落人（おちうど）がこの地に潜み、追手が迫ってもすぐ切り落とせるように葛（かずら）を使って作ったと言う伝説もある。
歴史馬鹿の僕は、そういう伝説に惹かれて行ってみたのでした。
とにかく、クネクネと曲がりくねった一車線から深い渓谷を観ながら、運転を間違えば、谷底へ落ちて死んでしまうような恐怖を味わいながら橋まで行ったスリルが未だに忘れられませんよう。

しかも、山野に自生するシラクチカズラで編まれた吊り橋は、全長45m、水面からの高さ14m。
歩くたびにユラユラと揺れてスリル満点。
渡し木と渡し木のすき間から見える渓谷の美しさもスリル満点。
ゾクゾクしました。

400年も続く伝統の阿波踊りが、洗練され、躍動的な現代の踊りになって観る僕の“日本人の血”を沸かせた！
そして、僕は祖谷渓谷に落ちて死ぬかもしれない、あのゾクゾクとするスリルを改めて思い出したものでした。

残念ながら、阿波踊りをまだ現地で観たことがない。
でも、テレビ画面の中に日本人の原点を見たようで、本当に元気をもらいました。

400年の伝統・鍛え抜かれた技と美。
そうだよね。
日本と日本人は、やっぱり素晴らしいと思いましたよう。

でも、現在の日本は歪（ゆが）められている。
病（や）んでいる。
テレビを見ていても悲惨なニュースは後を絶ってないよね！
自殺者は１年に３万人以上！



１０月１９日には、１８歳の少女がヨットスクールの屋上から飛び降り自殺した。
派遣切りに合い、仕事がなくなって、生活保護も受けられず
３０代の男が一人さびしく餓死をした。

この男のことを10月8日にNHKの「クローズアップ現代」が取り上げていましたよう。
「“助けて”と言えない～いま30代に何が」
見ていて本当に悲惨な事件だと思いましたね。
働き盛りの３０代が餓死している現状。

民主党政権は“コンクリートから人へ”と言っているけれど、
言っているだけ！
日本の未来を本当に素晴らしい国にしようとするビジョンを持った政治家が居ない！

ビジョンを持たないグータラな世襲の政治屋のために貴重な小百合さんの人生、家族の生活を無駄にすることはないのですよう。
世界に羽ばたく。
そういう選択もあるのです。
そして海外から日本を良くする選択だってある！

今日は残念ながらどんよりと雲っている。
しかし、日本の政治が駄目でも、日本は僕のふるさとですからね。
ふるさとは、やっぱり素晴らしい。
この素晴らしさだけは、政治が駄目でも存続してほしい。

祖谷（いや）渓谷の小便小僧

戦後の復興を立ち上げた政治家が今は居ない！
ビジョンを持たず日本を悪くする政治屋だけが馬鹿なことをやっている。
しみじみと、そう感じるこの頃です。

でも、今日もウィンナコーヒーを飲みながら
のんびりと楽しんで書いていますよう。

小百合さんと再会して幸せを噛み締めています。

『鰻重と阿波踊り』より

ずいぶん前のメールではありませんか！？



まだ２年前ですよ。

デンマンさんにとって、「阿波踊り」がそれほど素晴らしいのですか？

あのねぇ～、オッパイを自慢するように、このように踊って楽しんでいるお姉さんを見るのもいいですよ。





デンマンさんは、このようなお姉さんが好みなのではありませんか？



もちろん悪くはないのだけれど、やっぱりねぇ、日本で生まれ育って海外で人生の半分以上を過ごすと、「阿波踊り」を見ると、マジで「日本人の血」が騒ぐのですよ。　





どの女性を見ても美人に見えてきます。　一糸乱れぬ優雅で、しかも躍動的な女性の阿波踊りを見ていると言葉では言い表せない感激に「鳥肌」が立ってきますよ。



あらっ。。。そのように感激する時にも鳥肌が立つものなのですか？

そうなのですよ。。。僕の場合にはマジで感激すると鳥肌が立つのですよ。　小百合さんはどうですか？　「阿波踊り」を見て感激しませんか？

そうですわね。。。確かに日本的なお祭りで楽しそうですけれど、私はどちらかと言うと真夏にインドカレーを食べる方が感激するのですわ。





ほおォ～。。。真夏にインドカレーですか？　僕は日本のクソ暑い真夏には、どうしても「冷し中華」ですよ。　うへへへへへ。。。

ですってぇ～。。。
なんだか最後には食べ物のお話になってしまいましたわ。
そうですわよね。
夏の茹（う）だるような暑さの京都では、インドカレーよりは冷し中華の方があたくしには、ようござ～♪～ますわ。
今日も京都は茹だるような暑さでござあますう。

こうしてネットでコメントなどを書いている場合じゃござ～♪～ませんわ。
あたくしは冷房が嫌いなものですから部屋はムシムシしております。
「冷し中華」と聞いたら、マジで汗が噴き出してきましたわ。
もう、やってられません。

すぐ近くの中華料理店へ走ってゆこうと思います。

こんにちは。ジューンです。

暑い夏には「冷し中華」もよいですけれど、

バンクーバーは日本ほどには暑くならないのですわ。

だから、わたしは夏でも、やっぱり

フランス料理やイタリア料理がいいのです。

デンマンさんが久しぶりにご馳走してくれると言うので

イングリッシュベイを散歩しながら

シルビアホテルの近くの

イタリア・フランス料理専門レストランへ行きました。









デンマンさんが、何が食べたいの？ときくので、

ちょっとおねだりして仔牛と

フォアグラのローストをリクエストしました。



う～♪～ん。　期待していた通りですう。

仔牛は、フランス語で「ヴォー」veau、

英語では「ヴィール」vealですよね。

まだ脂肪が少なくて赤い色も薄い感じです。

特徴は香りやクセがなく、

とても柔らかいのですわ。

その分、バターなどコクのある食材と

あわせる場面が多いようです。

今回は春キャベツで包んだ乳飲仔牛と

フォアグラのローストです。

マルサラ酒とリコッタチーズのソースが

とっても合っていました。

２色のアスパラガスが添えてあって、

落ち着いた感じを与えています。

フレッシュでクセの無い乳飲仔牛に合わせるのは

贅沢にも濃厚なフォアグラですう。

やわらかな春キャベツと季節のアスパラは、

お肉とぴったりと相性が合っていましたよ。

ソースはしっかり目に全体をまとめていました。

普段、口にする機会がないヴィールと

フォアグラなので、とっても期待していました。

デンマンさんが特別に注文してくれた

カクテル「楊貴妃」が、まず出てきました。



わたしが首を長くして待っている間

デンマンさんは楊貴妃の大理石像を見るために

わざわざ中国の西安に行ったときの事を、

いろいろと話してくれました。



料理が出てくるのを待ちながら、

わたしは「楊貴妃」をチビリチビリお口に運びました。

いつものようにデンマンさんは、

かなり詳しい歴史のお話をしてくれましたが、

わたしは半分、上の空で聞いていました。

うふふふふ。。。



次に出てきたのはイタリア料理の

バヴェッティーネでした。

焼穴子、あさりと松茸に、たっぷりの

芽葱（ネギのスプラウト）があしらってありました。

食べた瞬間、京都の老舗（しにせ）で味わうような

上質の和食を連想させる優しい味わいでした。



そして、デザートにはクレームエペスでした。

クレームエペスと言うのは、

フランス・ノルマンディー地方の

生クリームの一種です。

乳酸発酵させた爽やかな

酸味と芳醇なコクが特徴です。

クリーミーなヨーグルトといった感じの味わいですわ。

エペス（epaisse)とはフランス語で

「厚い」「濃い」という意味の形容詞で、

その味わいを表現しています。

なぜか、どこか懐かしいキュートなテイストでしたわ。

フレッシュな巨峰との相性が抜群でした。

小百合さん元気ですか？
バンクーバーは素晴らしい６月日和ですよ。
日本は、たぶん梅雨の真っ最中だと思うけれど、
バンクーバーの６月は“ジューンブライド（６月の花嫁）”という言葉にふさわしい。
結婚式を予定する人が多い月ですよ。



今朝もすがすがしい雲一つない快晴の空でした。
でもね、夕べは大変だったのですよ。
恒例のアイスホッケー・スタンレー・カップの決勝戦の最終戦が行われたのですよ。

アメリカのボストンのチームとバンクーバーのカナックスの対戦でした。
１９９４年にもバンクーバーのカナックスが決勝戦に進出したのだけれで、
負けたのですよ。
１７年ぶりにスタンレーカップを手にするかどうかということで
バンクーバー市民は盛りあがったのです。

昨日も例によって僕は中央図書館に午前１０時にやって来て
３時２０分まで記事の草稿を書いて
"Uncorruptible"という英語の記事を投稿したのですよ。



■"Uncorruptible"

　（２０１１年６月１５日）

投稿し終わってから外に出たのだけれど、
最終戦を野外モニターで見ようという群集が図書館の外に集まていて、すごい騒ぎでした。
図書館を出てすぐに検問所があてセキュウリティの係員が持ち物をチェックしていた。
何事か！？と一瞬ギクリとしましたよ。
爆発物だとか花火や火薬類を調べていたようです。

後になって振り返れば当然の処置だと思ったけれど、
その時にはオーバーだと思いましたよ。
僕のカバンも調べられました。
とにかく、図書館の周りの道路は封鎖されて、検問所が設けられ
若者は行列に並んで検問の順番を待っているのでした。

検問所を過ぎると道路の上に座り込んで、多分、何千人という人間が当たり一面にたむろしているのですよ。
カナックスのユニホームを着て月光仮面のようなマントまで着て、
顔に化粧をしたり仮面をかぶったり、
あるいは仮装をしたり、
この盛り上がりようは日本では、ちょっと考えられないのではないか！？
とにかく異様な空気でしたよ。



僕はデンマン・ストリートのJoe Fortes Libraryへ向かって３０分ほどかけて歩いたのだけれど、
ダウンタウンの通りは平日（水曜日）にもかかわらず、いつもの３倍ぐらいの人が出ていました。
この人たちもカナックスのユニホームを着て月光仮面のようなマントまで着て、
顔に化粧をしたり仮面をかぶったり、
また仮装をしたりしていた。

若者のグループは車に乗って、クラクションを鳴らして景気をつけている。
まるでお祭り騒ぎですよ。
試合が始まるのは５時ごろですよ。
その２時間前にはダウンタウンは、すでにひどい賑わいでした。

僕は４時にJoe Fortes Libraryのパソコンを使うように予約してあったので
それに間に合うように出かけたわけです。
３０分ほど歩きました。
１時間ほどネットをやって記事の参考資料などを調べて、
それからJames Herriot さんの　All Creatures Great & Small のDVD を閉館（水曜日は午後６時）まで観たのです。



分館を出てウェストエンド・コミュニティセンターのロビーを通ってマンションに行こうとすると
ロビーのテレビの前に　５０人ほどの人だかりですよ。
いつもは多くても５，６人だけです。
いつもの１０倍ですよ。

とにかく、バンクーバーの町はカナックス・ファンの町のようになっていたのです。
僕はテレビを持ってないし、アイスホッケーには興味がない。
もちろん、スキーもスケートもホッケーもやるのは好きだけど、
人がやるのを見る時間があったら本を読んでいた方が性分に合っている。

それで、夕食をとってから図書館で借りてきた小倉千加子さんの『「赤毛のアン」の秘密』を読み始めた。
いつものようにCNNのローカルラジオ放送をつけっぱなしにしていた。
カナックスはボストンのチームに負けたようだ。

どうして分かるの？

これまで試合に勝つと通りを走る車はクラクションを鳴らしっぱなしにするし、
通りを歩く人は大声を挙げたり嬌声を発して勝利を祝うのですよ。
静かな通りの様子に、最終戦には負けたという事は分かったけれど、
夜の９時半ごろになってCNNのアナウンサーが興奮した状態で報道を始めた。
中央図書館の周りで暴動が始まったらしい。



つまり、カナックスが負けたので熱狂的なカナックス・ファンが車をひっくり返して火をつけたり、
ビルや店の窓ガラスを割ったりしてウサを晴らしている。
その内、４箇所から火の手があがったらしい。

街に出た実況中継のアナウンサーが
「警察が群衆に催涙弾を投げている」とか、
「ビンの欠片（カケラ）が当たって顔中が血だらけになっている人が歩いてくる」とか
「黒い煙があがっている。。。こんなことは見たことない！」とか叫んでいる。



それで本を投げ出して、僕はマンションの窓のそばによって外を見た。
中央図書館は見えないけれど、その上空は見渡せる。
確かに黒い雲が上空に伸びて、それが緩やかな風に吹かれてスタンレーパークの方向に２キロぐらい靡（なび）いている。
僕のマンションの北の空に黒い煙が靡いているのがはっきりと見えるのですよ。
すでに９時半を過ぎて、空はかなり暗くなってきていた。
でも、真っ暗ではない。

ダウンタウンの上空に報道機関のヘリコプターがキラキラと色とりどりの光を点滅させながら４機も舞っているのですよ。
ヘリコプターがグルグル飛び回る音が聞こえてくる。
ラジオのCNNからは、そのヘリコプターの１機に乗っている女性アナウンサーが実況放送をしているのですよ。
「群集はジョージア・バイアダクトの方向に動いていますう」
「少なくとも４箇所から火の手が見えますわア」



「シアーズ（SEARS）デパートの窓ガラスを割って一部の群衆が品物を盗み始めているようですウ」
女性アナウンサーが興奮して叫んでいるのですよ。



全く、アクション映画を見ているような気分になりました。

もう、本を読んでいる気分になれない。
CNNの実況放送を聴きながら
外を飛んでいるヘリコプターを見たり黒い煙がたなびいているのを見つめる。
アクション映画『ダイハード（Die Hard）』を観るような臨場感がちょとしましたよ。
その内、市役所で記者会見が開かれて、その模様を実況中継する。
消防署の所長がインタビューに答える。
そう言う訳で僕は午後９時半から午後１１時半までラジオのニュースに聴き耳をたてました。

さて、夕べの騒ぎが無かったかのように今朝は平穏に目覚めて
９時半にマンションを出のですよ。
夕べの騒ぎだから酷（ひど）い事になっているのではないか！？
道路は封鎖されたままになっているのではないか？
でもラジオのニュースを聴く限り、道路が封鎖されているとは言ってないので
僕は中央図書館に歩いてやって来ました。







火事場や破壊の現場を想像していたのだけれど、
思ったより酷（ひど）い状態ではありませんでした。
店のガラスやデパートのガラスが割れていたけれど、
すでに業者がベニヤ板を打ちつけて修理が済んでいた。

驚いたことに、中央図書館の大きなガラス窓も一枚割られていた。
でも、ベニヤ板ですでに修復されていた。
黒い煙が２キロにも靡（なび）いていたから、
すごい火事の現場があるのではないかと想像していたけれど、
少なくとも僕が歩いてきた道筋には火事の現場は全く見あたらなかった。

夕べのアナウンサーは「車をひっくり返して火をつけた」と言っていたから、
あの煙は車が燃えて出た煙だったらしい。
すでにひっくり返された車は、すべて取り除かれたようで
そういう車は一台も見あたらなかった。
壊れた窓ガラスの修復も終えて街はほぼ元通りでしたよ。

感心したのはボランティアの人たちがたくさん街に出て
紙くずや割れたガラスや空き瓶をきれいに片付けている姿でした。
午前９時半だというのに、
夕べの暴動の様子は、ほとんど街から消えていたのですよ。
その対応の早さに驚かされました。

１９９４年にも同じような暴動が起こったから
バンクーバー市では、その対応を考えていたようです。
あの物々しいセキュウリティの検問は、その対策の一環だったのでしょう！

とにかく、夕べのCNNのアナウンサーの叫ぶ声を聞いて想像していたアクション映画『ダイハード（Die Hard）』の場面は、一夜明けたら全く消えていたのには本当に驚かされました。
映画と現実の違いでしょうね。

日本は梅雨で、ムシムシ、ジメジメしていることでしょう。
栃木の山の家でバンクーバーのことでも想い出しながら、
軽井沢タリアセン夫人になりきって、気分だけでもルンルン、ランランでいてね。



じゃあ、風邪を引かないように元気で楽しく過ごしてね。
気持ちだけでも。。。

ですってぇ～。。。
なんだかすごいですわよね。
ホッケーの試合でバンクーバーのチームが負けたぐらいで暴動を起こすなんてちょっと呆れてしまいますわ。
あなたは、どう思いますか？

もう、バカバカしくなったので、あたくしは『ビートルズ』のDVDを借りて来て観ることにいたしますう。
あたくしはビートルズの熱烈なファンなのでござ～♪～ますのよ。。。



“キャ～　素敵ィ～♪～”

またビートルズの事を持ち出してきたので、あなたは“んもお～～　またかよ！”と思っているのでしょう！？
そのような、つれない事は言わないでくださいましなァ。





日本も含めて世界中にビートルズの熱狂的な嵐が吹き荒れたのは、あたくしが生まれる以前のことでしたわ。

こうして、たびたびビートルズの事を持ち出したから、
あなたにとっては、面白くもなんともないでしょうね！？

ところが何度も何度も書いたので、最近、あたくしはビートルズの夢をたくさん見るのでござ～♪～ますう。
軽井沢の万平ホテルに行くと
ジョンレノンとあたくしがカフェテラスで会うような気が、マジでするのでござ～♪～ますわ。
あなたも信じてよね。




滞在中のジョン・レノンは朝９時半ごろ、

このカフェテラスに下りてきたのですよ。

わたしたちに「おはようございます」と

日本語であいさつしたものですわ。

いつも庭に面した一番奥の席にすわって、

他のお客様には背を向けるような格好で

腰掛けていました。

ジョン・レノンのお気に入りは

ローヤルミルクティーでしたわ。

あなたは映画が好きですか？

嫌いな人はめったに居ませんよね。

うふふふふふ。。。

わたしは寅さんの映画が好きですわ。



嫌いな人に言わせると、

“あんなワンパターンの映画のどこがいいの？”

と言います。

でも、そのリフレーンがいいのですよね。

歌でも同じ言葉やリズムの繰り返しが

イヤではなく、むしろ快く響く事ってありますよね。

寅さん映画のテーマの繰り返しは

例えて言えば、歌のリフレーンのように快く響きます。

基本的には人情喜劇なんですよね。

寅さんという「非日常」を登場させることによって、

社会や家庭、人間が持っている普遍的な悩みを

浮き彫りにさせ、家族のあり方や人間の生き方を

考えさせてくれるのですよね。

そう思いませんか？

自分の恋は成就しなくとも、

結果的に周りを幸せにする寅さんは、

ピエロとして描かれています。

寅さんという自由人は、

平凡な人にも幸せな気分を味合わせてくれるような

化学で言う“触媒（しょくばい）”ですよね。

自分は変わらないのに相手が変わって行く

“幸せの触媒”です。
