モノクル誌は世界有数のライフスタイルマガジンであり、アート、食、ファッション、そしてビジネスにおける世界の流行を取り上げています。
For the past two years, Monocle has published an annual list of liveable cities. The list in 2009 was named "The Most Liveable Cities Index" and presented 25 top locations for quality of life. The winning city in 2007 was Munich, Germany and the 2008 winner was Copenhagen, Denmark.
過去2年間、モノクル誌は最も住みたい都市リストなるものを1年に１回発表しています。2009年度は「 最も住みたい都市指標」と名づけられ、25の都市が挙げられています。2007年度の勝者はドイツ・ミュンヘン、そして2008年度はデンマーク・コペンハーゲンでした。
Important criteria in this non-scientific survey are safety/crime, international connectivity, climate/sunshine, quality of architecture, public transportation, tolerance, Environmental issues and access to nature, urban design, business conditions, pro active policy developments and medical care.
この非科学的調査の重要判断基準は、安全性、国際関係、天候、建築品質、公共交通機関、包容性、環境問題や自然へのアクセス度、都会的デザイン、ビジネス状況、政策発展の為の積極性、そして医療保護です。

The only American city to make it on the list was Honolulu with its relatively low crime rate and weather. I am dissappointed that my hometown, New York City didn’t even make it but the city has come a long way to improve the quality of life but is no way near Tokyo in many key areas.

残念なことに米国でリストに入ることが出来たのは、比較的犯罪も少なく天候も良いホノルルだけでした。
私の生まれ故郷であるニューヨークがリストに入れなかったのはとても残念ですが、それでも随分と住みやすい街になりました。
ただまだまだ日本に近づくには長い長い道のりが必要です。
