the company にとって最高の時が来た。私が監督した映画
『ラーメンガール』（ブリタニー・マーフィ、西田敏行、余貴美子、
パク・ソヒ出演）がテアトル新宿で１月１７日に公開される。
ロマンティックでちょっぴりせつないコメディである本作で、
ブリタニー・マーフィは彼氏にふられ東京でひとりぼっちにされる
ついてない女の子アビーを演じる。負け犬のように逃げ帰るしかないかと
思われたその時、日本でも有数の頑固で喧嘩っ早いラーメン職人の元で、
ラーメン作りの修行を始めようと思い立つ。このラーメン職人を演じるのが
西田敏行、その長く豊かなキャリアの中でも一番のはまり役ではないかと
評判だ。
このラーメン職人、いつも酔っぱらっているし英語は一言もしゃべれない。
おまけに、アビーは甘えん坊の、口だけは達者で頭でっかちな
ニューヨーク娘、日本語は一言もしゃべれない。
そんな二人が出会った時に巻き起こる一つ一つは、時に爆笑だし、
時に心に迫るものがある。
それにどうやら、この映画は私自身の日本への、そして日本の文化への
ほろ苦いラブレターだと言えるようだ。

新作戯曲の初日を開ける。我々にとって、これほど喜ばしく名誉なことはない。

『ストーン夫人のローマの春』世界初演。
かの問題作が、世界で初めて、舞台に載せられるのだ。
映画ファンの方なら、６０年代にヴィヴィアン・リー主演で映画化された
『ローマの哀愁』をご覧になった方もあるかもしれない。
しかし、更に先端をいっている方なら、アカデミー賞受賞女優ヘレン・ミレンと
アン・バンクロフト、そしてオリヴィエ・マルティネス、そして
ブラジリアン・ビューティとその美貌をたたえられるロドリーゴ・サントロを
主演に迎えて私が監督した映画版をご覧になっているかもしれない。
この映画はエミー賞５部門、ゴールデン・グローブ賞５部門にノミネートされた。
物語の主人公は、老いゆくブロードウェイの大スター、美貌で知られた大女優
カレン・ストーン。齢５０にして挑んだ『ロミオとジュリエット』の
ジュリエット役で大失敗したのちに引退を決意、病気の夫を看病しながら夫婦で
世界一周の旅行をしようと旅立つが、夫はローマからアテネに向かう飛行機の中で
亡くなってしまい、孤独と失意のストーン夫人は、一人ローマに戻る。
『ラーメンガール』のアビーと同じように、異文化の中で一人取り残された
アメリカ女性、と云うわけだが、アビーと同じように彼女もまた、そこに残ることに
決める。裕福なストーン夫人が戦後の街に巣食う欲深い肉食獣たちに食い物に
されてゆく時、物語は暗い影を帯びてくる。
中でも、伯爵夫人でありながら今では売春の斡旋をしている年配のコンテッサに
ストーン夫人は次々とローマの社交界へと紹介される。社交界とはつまり、
金のためなら身体を売ることもいとわない若く美しい男のことだ。
その中の一人、パオロはかつては貴族であったが、今では売春だけを生活の
手段にしており、その手管で未亡人となった女優を誘惑していく。
そこから続く物語はまさにブラックコメディかつ悲劇、まさにかの偉大な
テネシー・ウィリアムズの素晴らしいイマジネーションの泉（訳注：戯曲の題にある
「spring」とは「春」の他に「泉」も意味します）の賜物としか言いようがない。
セクシーで、息苦しいほど官能的で、スキャンダラス。
第二次大戦終戦直後のイタリア、と設定はモダンだが、例えば『危険な関係』などと
同じデカダンの匂いがすると思う。

『１９４５』は第二次大戦終戦直後の闇市を舞台に、ぎりぎりな人々が必死で
生き延びる姿を描いている。
レイプ、殺人、陰謀とかけひきがこのロマンティック・スリラーには渦巻いており、
最初から最後まで椅子の背に背中がつかない状態間違いなしだ。
椅子から転げ落ちる方だってあるかもしれない。
芥川龍之介作『薮の中』と映画『羅生門』に発送を得たこの物語には、
the company の最も多才なスターのほとんどが出演した＿パク・ソヒ、山本亨、
松浦佐知子、深貝大輔、斉藤直樹、矢内文章、宮光真理子。
そこに、『バーム・イン・ギリヤド』や『ラーメンガール』で出会えた大好きな
俳優たち＿＿瀬川亮、有希九美、呂美、倉本朋幸も参加してくれた。
それに加え、the company が開催したワークショップから参加してくださった
総勢８０名にも上るアンサンブルの皆さんもいる。
これこそが the company の最も美しい部分であるし、歓びでもある。

FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS THE COMPANY WILL DOMINATE
JAPANESE SHOW BUSINESS: THANK YOU JAPAN!
It's a great time for the company. My film THE RAMEN GIRL with
Toshiyuki Nishida, Brittany Murphy, Sohee Park and Kimiko Yo will be
opening in Shinjuku on January 17. The film, a romantic and touching
comedy-drama stars Brittany Murphy as Abby, a down on her luck
American girl stranded in Tokyo when her boyfriend dumps her.
Left with no option but returning home a failure, she decides to study
ramen with Japan's most cantankerous ramen chef played by Toshiyuki
Nishida in what many feel is his finest role to date. He's a drunk who
can't speak a word of English and she's a spoiled New York wise ass brat
who can't speak a word of Japanese. What happens when these two get
together is sometimes hilarious and sometimes really touching. I guess
you could say that the film is my bitter sweet love letter to Japan and to
Japanese culture. Please come see it.

Then in the following month on Feb 28th we are delighted and honored
to be opening a thrilling new play by Martin Sherman at the Parco Theater.
It's the world premiere of Tennessee Williams' THE ROMAN SPRING OF
MRS. STONE. For the first time ever in the world, this daring novel will be
seen on the stage. If you are a movie fan you may have seen the 60's film
with Vivien Leigh or if you're a bit hipper and up to date, you may have
seen my film of the same name starring Academy Award winners Helen
Mirren and Anne Bancroft with Olivier Martinez and the Brazillian beauty,
Roderigo Santoro. The movie was nominated for five Emmy awards and
five Golden Globes.
It's the story of an aging actress, Karen Stone, a great Broadway star
and beauty, who following a huge flop in the role of Juliet in ROMEO
AND JULIET at the age of 50, retires from the stage to nurse her sick
husband and accompany him on a round the world tour. He dies in a
plane traveling from Rome to Athens. Mrs. Stone returns to Rome alone
and bereft. Like Abby in RAMEN GIRL she is an American female alone in a
foreign culture and, like Abby, decides to stay. The story turns dark as
the wealthy Mrs. Stone falls prey to the many greedy predators inhabiting
the city after the war. Particularly an elderly Contessa who is now a female
pimp who introduces Mrs. Stone to Roman society in the form of beautiful
boys who are willing to sell their bodies in order to get their hands on money.
One of these boys, Paolo, a former aristocrat reduced to prostitution as
his sole means of survival, seduces the widowed actress and what follows
is a black comic- tragedy that springs directly from the fantastic imagination
of the great Tennessee Williams. It's a sexy, sultry, and scandalous play
reminiscent of LES LIASONS DANGEREUSE in the more modern but equally
decadent setting of post war Italy. ROMAN SPRING stars Rei Asami,
Kyoko Enami, Jiro Dan, Tomohiko Imai, Sohee Park, Shinji Suzuki.
And then on March 13 at 10:30 NHK will air of the company's critically
acclaimed production of “1945”. Set in the black market immediately after
the end of WW2, the play tells the story of desperate people doing desperate
things to survive. Rape, murder, intrigue and politics combine in this romantic
thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. It may even
knock you off your seat. Loosely based on RASHOMON, the play stars most
of the company's most versatile actors, Sohee Park, Akira Yamamoto, Sachiko
Matsuura, Daisuke Fukagai, Naoki Saito, Bunsho Yanai, Mariko Miyamitsu along
with some of our favorite actors who have worked with us in BALM IN GILLEAD
and/or RAMEN GIRL Ryo Segawa ,Kumi Yuki, Romi, Tomoyuki Kuramoto.
In addition there is a fantastic ensemble of almost 80 actors from our workshops.
